Mauser bolt bushing

kendog said:
Greg doesn't do Mausers.

Have you asked him why? I pulled the bolt out of a Mauser today and it looked like I wouldn't have to modify my tooling much to do it. It is a bit more work than a remington to get all the stuff off the bolt and if Greg just is too busy, I would certainly understand.

However, the ejector is cut in a slot on the bolt and the bushing would weaken the ligament between the firing pin and ejector. If Greg thinks that would weaken the bolt too much, then I wouldn't pursue it. He has probably cut one apart to get the internal dimensions. I haven't.

If it's the former, PM me and I'll give you a quote.

For the work required it's usually a no win . Yes the bolts CAN vary between glass hard and sticky soft .
What is the situation that requires you to bush the bolt ?

Ggmac, My bolt has a small pit next to the firing pin. Primer material tends to flow into the pit and I think a smooth bolt face would cure my problem. The rifle is a 6.5x55AI, Mauser action, Bartlien barrel, and Boyds stock. Just got back from Texas and the rifle was nailing 4" clays at 500m in 5>10 mph cross winds.

So RP bump, are you wanting to bush the pin to the same diameter firing pin? Usually a bushing job is to put in a smaller diameter firing pin to address cratering issues.

Can you post a photo showing where the pit is?

Carlsbad, I'm not looking for a smaller diameter firing pin. The "pit" being next to the firing pin hole allows a crater effect next to the firing pin strike in the primer.

Anneal, weld pit, machine weld, and re-heat treat bolt. Not sure who does this, but someone must. Maybe dont even need to do all the steps, just weld and machine providing the lugs are not softened by the welding process.

Send it out to a laser micro welder. Clean up will be minimal and It's doubtful it will hurt the heat treat over a large enough area to worry about.

Face the bolt , re headspace . While your at it true face of bolt to bore centerline . If your headspace is tight you may get buy just facing bolt . I've done hundreds , no exaggeration , almost every old mauser has some .
