Mauser 25-06 AI

Hey guys, I’m into the process of building a CZ Mauser 98 in 25-06AI. Thanks to yalls help on here giving me resources and people to contact!

The rifle is equipped with a CZ 98 Action, leupold bases and 1” Rings, bent bolt handle and lugs lapped by Mike the Rifler. A Brownells short chambered 25-06 barrel 24” (1-10 twist) reamed and chambered to 25-06 AI by WSMNUT. The stock is being done by my self and I know it’s ugly, but it’s my first so take it easy on me :) I’m working with Harbor Freight tools over here.

Trigger is a Mauser 98 Timney.. still working on inletting the stock so I can get it to function properly.

I’ve read a post by AckeymanII and he had great results and high velocities with a 26” (1-12). Unfortunately I bought this barrel about a year ago and did not know such information.

Planning on equipping the rifle with a Burris fullfield E1 4.5-14, as Mike the Rifler bent the handle to accommodate a Burris scope.

Although no experience with the 26-06AI - I have some with the 6.5 version, which performed well with H-1000/ 140g/ Match primer. Load was slightly compressed. Awesome varmint and deer rifle.

No H-1000 here. I’m still fairly new to reloading and don’t have a massive stash. However I do have IMR 4831 and 7828 SSC.

You haven't mentioned what your intentions are with the is rifle although I think most of us assume it will be for hunting. You also haven't mentioned the chamber dimensions so it's a little difficult to suggest bullets and COAL.

Your 1:10" twist is the standard by which most all .25 caliber rifles were/are produced. You will have no problem achieving the velocities you desire by simply switching powders and bullets. The only ones you will have a problem with are the Berger 133 and 135 since they are too long for the 1:10 twist.

I've been shooting the 115 gr. Bergers or the Nosler 115 Ballistic Tips or the Partitions for hunting, usually over either:

Re-25/26
Norma MRP
Ramshot Magnum
VVN-560

All of these will have the performance you're looking for with a heavier hunting bullet.

Be sure to know your chamber dimensions before reloading. Find the lands and work from there.

Enjoy the process!

:)

Not to be the safety police, but did you guys hardness test that action! It looks scary to me. I wouldn't have sent it outta my shop before a hardness test.

I shoot 75 gr Vmax out of my .25-06 most of the time. Sometime back I tried IMR 4064 and the groups it shot left me with a big grin. That's the powder I use now for the 75's. If you can find them...The Nosler 110 gr Accubonds are a fine bullet using 4831SC. With Zack doing the barrel...It will be a shooter.

Mike the Rifle did what appears to be a nice job on the bolt handle, you will appreciate the extra length. I think you may find that a bedding job may be in order to get the best potential from your rig. DO work up loads slowly and be on the lookout for sticky bolt and flattened primers. You will enjoy the 25-06 AI, a fine selection indeed.

It’ll be for hunting and just fun slapping steel. I do not know the chamber dimensions off my head, but I can ask WSMNUT.

Personally I didn’t think that was necessary, but I also didn’t know people hardness test a Mauser. I thought that was only for the older 1903 springfields.

There was someone selling a bunch of actions and barreled actions a year or two ago on gubroker that were in the some of the big CA fires.

Project looks like its coming together. Nice cartridge too. All the best.

Well that’s odd, I purchased this action from black market arms. There a big seller, I don’t think they would have done something like that.

I've not worried too much about the CZ (Brno) Mauser actions, I think they got some of the best carburizing (JMO). A Mauser will start 'telling' you right away if it's starting to set back, you'll have problems opening the bolt. It's the pre and post WW1 actions (before about 1930) that I can have doubts about. Those I have re-carburized. Your CZ should safely handle any cartridge that fits the magazine, with a .473 head. Don't know as I'd barrel one up for one of the new Noslers . It takes a bunch of "whittlin'" to get one to feed a SAUM/WSM reliably. I'm not much interested in converting a '98 for one of those, but it is possible. There are better actions available for those "magnum" cartridges. Being "case hardened" is difficult to get a good Rockwell test on a '98. They make fine 'classic rifles', though!

Several years back a friend of mine had a Mauser chambered in .257 A.I. and always had trouble with it feeding from the magazine. After he sold it, I did some research on Mausers and found that they were designed to have the cartridges in the mag stacked at a 30-degree angle and the feed rails of the magazine must be sized accordingly. The back end of the mag needs no modifications, the front of the cartridge stack is now larger because of the reduced body taper from the Ackleyized brass. Without modifying the magazine dimensions to match the now larger sized cartridges, feeding problems will likely happen.

I thought this problem may arise, I have a single shot adapter in case. Is it the feed lips that need modified on the receiver or the magazine assembly it’s self?

Mike does nice work!
