Math help please

What equation can I use to figure out how many rounds that I will get out of a pound of powder? In other words...I have one pound of powder and will be loading 40.0 grains in each round. How many rounds will I be able to get out of that Pound of powder? I have seen this before , but can't remember where. Thanks in advance,

7000 gr. to a lb. of powder.

7000 divided by 40 equals 175.

Thanks for the answer! 7000grs to a pound does ring a bell now. Other stuff is funny too....over the last 32 years of loading, I think I have knocked over a few full cases myself. I have not been able to achieve the 80grs into a 40 grn case...that must be a long drop tube that you are using!!

I forgot to close the dump knob on my Chargemaster 1500. When I was pouring powder in the hopper, the next time I reloaded, it wasn't filling it very quickly. What's up with this? Oh, that pile of powder building up next to the scale must be involved somehow. Sure enough, the darned thing was open and I had at least a pound of powder on the workbench. A few months later, I did the same thing again!!!!!! That was enough to form the habit of ALWAYS closing the dump, as the last step in cleaning the unit.

My reloading days were long ago and I am just getting back into it with the help of NorCalMikie and others and the board in general. No expert here. BUT! Always a "but" in there, right?

An idiot I knew double charged a Swede with IMR 4895, I think it was. He was probably loading 37 grains as that is the accuracy load. The range in loads for that powder in that case with the favorite 140 grain bullet is 32 to 40 grains. I was told long ago that 4895 had destroyed more rifles with double charges that all the other powders combined. Reason given? It is very dense and takes up less volume so you don't notice it overflowing the brass like others do in that situation. I was told that by a local gun store owner that handles reloading supplies. Like I said: Maybe it was 4895 and then....? But the theory applies.

Now the spice in this story was that when I mentioned the incident to the gun shop owner a couple weeks after the fact and he said "and that creep was in here trying to sell me the bolt from that gun. It had been hammered out of the receiver and he had filed the bottom of the ball to get the marks out and the ball was oval as a result. A real Prince, that one.
Wanted $20". I think that the original double charge was God trying to thin the herd.

I double charged my black powder Hawkin rifle one time. I was shooting and my dog was chained up barking like mad. Just after I dumped 80 grains of FFG down the tube, the dog started wailing so I placed the rifle in the rack and went around front to see what his problem was. A porky was waddling across the driveway so I took the dog inside. Went back to the shooting bench and dumped 80 grains of FFG down the barrel then a patched round ball and placed a cap on the nipple. When I touched it off. the recoil broke my finger, bruised my shoulder and really got my attention back where it belonged. Didn't hurt the rifle a bit.

Just joshing you. I understand what you are saying about staying focused. I'll bet when you are ramming a ball in a clean barrel you feel the pressure relieve as you get the ball close to being in firing posit on top of the powder. Feel it real careful. Your barrel should have swelled. That barrel maker'[s name should be mentioned as he makes a truly over-engineered and safe product. Measure the barrel outside diameter near the charge location and see if there isn't a little "growth".

I read an article years ago where they were testing modern 50 cal black powder barrels and how much punishment they would take. I was astonished that they loaded 300 grains of powder and a 300gr bullet. Then they loaded 300 powder and two 300gf bullets one on top of the other. Thery reported no expansion of the barrel after several rounds. Then for a test they loaded 300 powder, 300gr bullet and another 300gr bullet a few inches above the first. Well you guessed it, the barrel exploded. Still I would never have thought it would take what it did. I am pretty sure it was a Hawken. Good stuff.
