Material differences and bedding compound for rifles

Good evening, I have noticed a difference in the finish of bedding materials used for stock bedding some seem to produce a very smooth glass like finish while others are course. Is there a difference in application that produces a smoother finish or is it the product being used? Thanks for the advice

Dave,
You can also purchase Devcon with various metal fillers, Stainless Steel, Titanium, Aluminum.
I believe those highlighting that the release agent being thinner does contribute to the smoothness of the cured bedding product. Just my experience.

So that begs for the question of what is the best release agent I’ve seen shoe polish car wax Pam cooking spray Hornady one shot and I believe Brownells sells a spray on release agent
I am working on this to get a better finish on my bedding!

Don't do Pam, I did that a long time ago and its the only time I ever got an action stuck in a stock. The Brownells spray is great, Johnsons paste wax is great and McLube spray is also great.

Remember the bedding takes a mirror surface off the action. If you want and ultra smooth shiny bed job, polish the action to a mirror finish. And part-all paste is a great release agent as that’s what it’s intended use is for.

Part-all #2 is all I use for the last decade. Works great.

That is the exact result. I’m looking for one of my guns was done by somebody else. I don’t know who got the gun used but the bedding job looks like that quality what I’ve been doing hasn’t been up to that snuff on my other guns I need to improve thanks for the tips. Everybody, I’ll have to get some and try it

I have used 6 different kinds of epoxy. I can get a reflective finish with all of them. I can also get a non-reflective finish with all of them.

I think the finish is determined by the release agent and the surface condition of the metal.

What type of release agent are you using?
