Match Strategy with E-targets

What would ones match strategy while shooting on e-targets, with iron sights, be? I have not shot on them yet. In a match with a live puller, I:

1) take the shot,
2) get on the scope and evaluate conditions
3) evaluate shot position and value
4) look at shot on neighboring targets
5) evaluate conditions
6) adjust sights
7) take shot
8) repeat

Of course I've left items such as rebuilding position, breathing and such.

I look at shot on neighboring targets to try to assess if a condition change came up that I missed ie: all shots favoring a side of the target, or I just broke a bad shot. I feel that I loose the benefit of feedback from other shooters.

The e-target will give me more time on the scope to try and figure out any nuances of condition changes.

Some of the e targets systems will allow you watch other shooters targets. So you may still get that feedback that you said you wanted.

If the system is set up to show other targets, the principal difference, to me, is that your spotting scope is now only for mirage. You no longer need to look through it for anything to do with your target, so you must discipline yourself to look through the scope, before checking the screen. We use a 7 second delay. If no delay, this distinction is probably somewhat less important.

Keep focused on your follow thru. On ets with no delay it's a real easy habit to form of breaking the shot and flickiing your head to look at the screen for the shot.

THIS! At our range (Bridgeville Rifle and Pistol, in Delaware), "Prairie Dogging" is the thing that kills great shooters that are new to the E-Target thing. I try to warn folks that are new to us to watch follow through.

Our targets (Hexta) allow you to view other targets, but it takes time to cycle through other views, and there is always a risk of making corrections off of someone else's targets, so you do lose that ability I think.

On the plus side, you get a really nice composite plot of ALL your shots, including sighters, so you can shift your group a bit if you start building on one side or another.

Hope this helps,

Frank

A Silver Mountain system using a server can show you, with a touch of a finger, your surrounding targets at the bottom of your screen. I've got to second the follow through issue, it's a real temptation to look at that screen right after the bang.

I would recommend that you use your own tablet. You'll be familiar with it and you won't be an Apple person trying to figure out Android or the reverse. Can't tell you many times a shooter will show up with their spouse's tablet and hand it to me saying, "Can you make this work? I've never used it before." Make sure you know how to connect to WiFi, get your browser started, type in a web site, and how to refresh your screen.

Spend a little time figuring out where you're going to place the tablet at your shooting position. You want to be able to see the screen in the sunlight and have it close enough so that you can tap the screen without really getting out of position.

We only just got going on E targets in matches at my home range (NFGA) towards the end of last year (ShotMarker).

For the Prone matches I have shot on them to date, For me; there is virtually zero difference to the sequence you listed above except I do your step 3 on the tablet ( takes 2 seconds or less) I then take a quick glance at the flag / flags I was using and then I go to the spotting scope to check mirage. I rarely use other people targets for anything unless I get a shot way off from where I expected it. If that is the case then I would glance at the little targets that can be shown on the bottom of the tablet on the SM system to see if others got the same result as I did. Anytime this has happened to me in the past I would typically wait a bit and double check conditions before taking another shot.

As previously stated; It is tempting to go to the tablet 1st after breaking the shot which will most definitely cause problems so that is a minor new thing to learn to avoid doing.

If you are still in the Northeast the big Three 600 yard ranges that you have likely shot at in the past will have ShotMarker targets this year.
( Scarborough Maine, NFGA in New Hampshire + Reading Rifle and Revolver in Massachusetts )

Hope to see you on the ranges.
