match sight diopter questions

Picked up this rifle for Mid range and Long range, maybe even XTC. Its an Eliseo 5r in 6mm BR norma.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what diopter lens to get, where to mount it (front sight or rear sight, what power might be applicable (I am 57, don't need glasses to see the front sight, but its almost that time) and where to buy it?

I also am wondering if I should get a variable front sight aperture, as I know nothing about them. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I had a great shooter recommend a + 0.3 and +0.5 front lens, from OK weber. Tubb also suggests a rear diopter in the same power, but how that fits in with the Gehmann variable rear aperature is baffling me.

For prone shooting get the 30 mm right sight with adjustable aperature (.4-.6 mm model) and a .5 lens. Put the lens on the front (muzzle side) of the sight.

A 30 mm might be a bit much for XC shooting. It will catch a bunch of wind in off hand.

Just my thoughts.

I'm pretty sure Bob meant the 4.0-6.0mm front aperture. The aperture size depends on the sight radius, and use of front lens. I have a near similar rifle, and use a 0.5 diopter front sight which I like really well, but with it enlarging the bull, you need a larger front aperture. I didn't think the 0.3 diopter made a huge difference. With that length barrel and 0.5 diopter, a variable 2.9-4.9mm front aperture was fine. When I added a but 6" extension tube, I had to go to a larger aperture, spanning 4.0-6.0mm and shoot across the course at about 5.3mm.

The rear Gehmann variable diopter is very nice, allowing you to put the focus exactly where you want it without straining the eye focus. This has a built in diopter as well, I believe magnifying by 1.5x. This screws in between the rear sight and the iris. Some people report that the lens can shoot loose over time as it is made for smallbore, but I've been using mine the last few years on my 6.5 Creedmoor with no problems, but I always keep a look out for it to do anything crazy, and if that happened, I would just immediately unscrew it and go on shooting.

Hope this helps,

Travis

Do you mean aperture range? I would recommend using an adjustable front aperture at the least, as you may want to adjust size based on the light conditions. There is such a personal preference, but I would guess you would need one in the 4.5mm range with a 0.5 front diopter. Having a rear diopter will not change the size needed as both the target and ring will be equally enlarged. I have a really long sight radius, with a 6" extension tube on a 28" barrel, and with that diopter, the 4.9mm aperture could be used, but was a little too small, so I had to go up to the next bigger range and use about a 5.3.

REPLY (missed to "quote"): Great that you've managed to avoid glasses and can still focus on the front ring - but you may need a rear lens if your distance vision is not as good as your short distance focus, otherwise the front eagle eye will simply magnify a fuzzy aiming mark.

Like others, a good combo is a 0.5 e/e up front with a 4-6 variable front iris (but this is dependant on your personal preference for how much white you like to see around the black) with a rear lens attached to your rear sight to bring the aiming mark into reasonable focus whilst still having a clear front ring.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial for front lens and diopter rear sights(does this just mean it has a lens also?). Looked thru Champions Choice catalog but no detailed info on this typre stuff. Tried to join National Match? website but when I registered it came back and said I was permanetly baned for life????. No way to send a msg to admin. Tks

BOhio, thanks for the link, been searching for a couple days with no luck. Been reading all the way back on the threads here. Looking for info on putting a lens on an old Redfield Bigbore since all my match guns still wear these. I've seen a Champions Choice adapter to put 18mm stuff in a Big Bore, was wondering if 22mm would fit without the adapter? I assume 18mm is the smaller 22(smallbore) size?

Depending on the set up you are looking for, see this link, it shows a rear lens holder that attaches to the rear sight. I use a rear lens that is .25 dioptre less than my long distance prescription. I have a 30mm front dioptre 0.5.
