Marlin JM?

I have heard and read about fakes on the market. Guys buy the letter stamps and mark the barrel “JM” and try to sell it as an original. All the ones I’ve seen have the stamp very close to the receiver. There is a Marlin on our sale board right now that I have doubts about.

A couple more differences are the white escutcheon near the sling swivel stud. The also have the micro groove barrel instead of standard rifling.

The significance is that the JM rifles are good whereas the remington rifles suck.

The new rugers are better than both by a wide margin IMO.

Many of the early Rem/Marlins sucked. They were poorly assembled. After a little while they got past that and started making them decent. I have a later 1895 built by Remington that is decent quality and shoots fine.

It did take sone work to smooth up the action, but that had to be done even to the JMs.

I bought my 39A in the 70’s and my 444SS in the late 90’s or early 2000’s (can’t remember).

Remington made, wood to metal fit is superb.
Overall finish is first rate for a factory rifle
‘REP’ is next to action.
Oh yeah, accuracy meets my expectations
Of course all of this is my opinion

I have a few of the JM Marlins, all of them are pre safety bar rifles. Some of my favorite rifles to shoot and have fun with. I bought one of the new Ruger Marlin 45-70s 1895SBL models, it’s a quality rifle, I had to try one and I’m glad I did. I’d like to get my hands on one of the new 336s, just waiting for the pricing to calm down a bit. My older marlins have both micro groove and Ballard rifling, both of done well by my book.

In the past I’ve only looked for Marlins marked with the JM stamp, mostly because if I ever resell one of those rifles the JM stamp is a prerequisite for so many potential buyers.

I saw one where the stamp was in a weird spot, unusually far from the action. I googled “JM stamp” and found a couple sites talking about fake stamps and some guys trying to sell them.

I appreciate you saying something, never even crossed my mind.

It was made by marlin instead of remington. That is their proof mark wjere the remington proof mark says REP in an oval

And...or

S/N begins with 'MR' (Marlin/Remington) on lower left receiver

The 'badd' ones were mfg'd around 2010-2014 when the 'RemLins' were built

Been said the quality control improved after '14

X/bolt safety started around 1983....Don't let that worry you...they were still great rifles

I've whittled my Marlins down to a few select favorites....as in pic

2001 45 Colt Cowboy...bought new/unfired from original owner...he chopped to 20" from 24"

I chopped it from 20" to 16" along with X/bolt safety delete from Bear Tooth Merc in WY

Even the older ones can benefit from a complete strip down & polish & buff internal parts

This 45 Colt runs a smooth as a baby's butt......
