Markings on case neck

Fairly new to reloading and I just came across an issue I can't figure out. I was sizing/depriming some cases for dad and noticed that all of them had splits and almost like gouges on the mouth of the case. Anyone who knows or has an idea, I'd be grateful to hear about it. These were brand new, never before fired factory ammo. The splits/markings are so far down that it's too much to trim off.7A24F9ED-179A-4D85-A9B7-511CA189B4BB_1_105_c.jpeg

Hmmm it was Winchester ammo but maybe that’s what it is. The picture doesn’t show, but all the cases also had splits on the case mouth. I tried trimming one down, I took it down to 1.905, .005 shorter than what the book calls for and they were still visible

Is it a 'split' or a impression on the brass? A split is exactly that meaning a 'cut' THROUGH the case. If it is a split it's not usable. Appears in the pic to be an impression. If that's an impression the first time it's fired it will be gone.

Don't you have good pictures of the original unfired rounds? I tend to agree with others that it is more likely than not crude crimping marks that some manufacturers use on their hunting ammo - PPU and Prvi use same method if I recall correctly (from what I've seen) - they look terrible, but they will not be an issue - you don't have to trim it away - just size, trim, chamfer as if it's not there and shoot, next time around the marks will much less if not gone altogether.

I know he has more unfired from the same box, I’ll have to check them. But yes, they are splits. I thought I might be able to trim them enough to get below the splits but they’re too far down

Splits mean that the brass is cracked/broken - all the way through - if the split is/was wide enough, you'd see the bullet, correct? If so, then pull the bullets and chuck the brass.

Factory crimps , no big deal don't worry about trying to trim them away... Just load as normal... Remington has done it for years like that.... The Lee factory crimp die will also make crimps like that... There not split , just crimp dents...
