March x 8x80 majesta reticle options

Hi All,
I’m looking at picking up the March Majesta 8-80, mainly for F-Class, and weighing up the reticle options. The MTR-WFD looks ideal—especially for managing heavy mirage—but it’s currently on an 8-week lead time.

The MTR-W1 and MTR-W2 are in stock, so I’m also considering those. I’ve only had hands-on time with the March M-Dot, so I don’t have much to compare the others to.

Just wondering what others are preferring in terms of reticle choice—any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated!

I have 2 W1's. I was tempted to order the W2 last time. The center dot on the W2 is smaller than the W1.
Small enough to make me wonder if I would be able to see it.
Pull up the reticle specs. It is less in diameter that the same horizontal reticle plane it lies within.

Only you can figure that one out.
Do you prefer a simple reticle with hold offs? (WO)
Do you like a floating dot? (W1)
The WFD was made just for F class shooting. It will bracket the target better,
but it's a busy reticle if your not use to one.

I'm sure Denys will be along and give his 10 cents worth.

I have the wfd and like it. Most of the time I'm just using the center dot and don't even notice the rest of the reticle. I haven't used the other ones so I can't help you there.

I opted for the W Dot as well. But mine will be used solely at 300 meters at The Tack Driver.

All my other scopes are FFP with holds or Christmas tree style.
Was thinking if I was to get the WFD than it’s only good for Fclass whereas at least W1even W2 might be good for some other disciplines.

I see that the OP, @Slice is in Australia. That may explain why the MTR-WFD version is not in stock in that country. For some strange reason, the F-class shooters outside of the USA think that the targets in America are different from all other countries, and so they think that the WFD would not work on their targets.

They are wrong.

The NRA Highpower LR targets are 6feet X 6feet. NRA is also a member of ICFRA (International Confederation of Fullbore Rifle Associations) which governs the rules and the targets so as to have some semblance of consistency and be able to have World Championships and so on. The ICFRA rulebook says the target frame must be 1.8m X 1.8m in other words 6'X6'. The dimensions of the rings are the same as the NRA-LR and -LRFC targets. The numbers in the rings will be different and the X is a V, but only a Majesta user can see these numbers at a 1000 yards in the first place.

It took me a year to design the MTR-WFD reticle, and I put in everything I knew about F-Class into it. This is my 3rd reticle for March scopes, and it is a radical design. When they first saw it, they hesitated, I gave them my explanation, and they took a gamble. I designed it on a computer and you can see the background I used to refine it, on the video at the March website. Turns out the background was a great way to show off the reticle and to teach people how to use it.

As a reticle designer, I can tell you that what you see on the paper looks quite different IRL (in real life). The reticle jumps at you when it's black on white, but the WFD is so fine, that IRL it almost seems like a HUD in a game. The reticle is not busy at all and it was intentionally designed that way. I kept the lines at a bare minimum, just enough to support illumination in the Aiming Circle.

I knew what the specs of the Majesta were when started the design and the WFD maximizes the wide-angle qualities of the riflescope, without going full bells and whistle. An F-class shooter is concerned about the wind, and holding the waterline when shooting off center. Who cares if you make a perfect wind call when holding edge of target if you can't stay level and shoot an 8 at 6 o'clock. An 8s is an 8 regardless where it hits. The WFD has built-in cues to help you stay on waterline, regardless of how far you're holding.

People say, just dial when you get too far. HA! This past weekend at TSRA, in the last match of the day, I was holding as far as edge of black on the left to edge of target on the right, from one shot to the next. I shot a 188-4X, good enough for 5th place in F-TR for that match, 3 points off the lead. I was in my Kowa all the time during the string. I would decide where to hold and I would transition to my rifle, place the dot on the ring, check the top cue and fire, followthrough and back to the spotting scope as my right hand was loading the next round. At one point, I was holding edge of black on the right, as indicated by my Kowa. I took the shot and went back to the Kowa and noticed the mirage had shifted COMPLETELY. (My next shot was edge of black on the left.) Anyway the shot came up as an 8 midway between the X and where I was holding. I got caught by the switch, but not completely. I saw a number of 6s on other targets. I cannot dial that fast, and at 70years old, I can guarantee that I would screw it up in very short order. The WFD was designed for exactly for that.

When the conditions are great, the aiming circle and the central dot are perfect for that type of shooting. My old eyes would have a problem seeing the dot by itself, but with its circle a half MOA away, the design draws the eye to it and you can place that dot. At 80X, I told my shooting partner that I could place the dot on the top right segment of the letter X in the X-ring. It is that surgical.

The MTR-WFD is very popular in the USA among the top F-Class shooters. It does take time to adapt to it and I find that older people who have been shooting conventional reticles for a long time, need a few matches to get comfortable with it. But after that, don't try to take it away from them.

If the WFD did not exist, for F-class I would use the MTR-W1 or MTR-W2. These are essentially the wide version of the existing reticles MTR-1 and MTR-2. I would have urged March to produce the MTR-W5, the equivalent to the MTR-5, which I have in my March-X 10-60X56 HM. The MTR-W1 is the MTR-1 with extended horizontal and the bottom line goes further down while the top line stayed the same. It's a solid design. The MTR-W2 is the same as the MTR-2 but with extended horizontal. A good solid design. The MTR-W0 is also like the MTR-1 but extended in all directions and with more hashes. An excellent design.

I know nothing of field target and airguns, but the MTR-WFT is designed for that type of shooting. It's an extended version of the existing MTR-FT.

I chuckle when I hear people say I won't want to buy a riflescope that I would only be able to use for F-Class. I chuckle for 2 reasons. 1- Even if it was true that it can ONLY be used for F-Class, has the person even looked at top end F-class rifle these days? Would they take that to hunt? 2- And of course, the WFD is not JUST for F-class. The design is great for any type of LR shooting at known distances, in any conditions. If you want to hold off in elevation while hanging upside down from a tree, that's not the reticle for you. But if you shoot at long distances, the wings will show you that your rifle is not level and at 10X, 20X, 40X or 80X, the SFP measurements work fine. At shorter distances, you can really place that central dot very exactly.

I hope that answers the questions, here. I'm happy to discuss at length but know this: I have been using the WFD for almost 2 years now and I have not really used any of the others since then. I think they are all solid reticles that will work really well for you. Some may require a bit more time to adapt to them. It's amazing how much "seeing" your brain is doing for you. Finally, I am ecstatic that March was willing to take a chance with my reticle. It seems to have worked out quite well.
