March 8-80 for F-Class help

I'm looking at replacing my Sightron 10-50x60mm with a March 8-80x56mm for F-Class MR and LR in the future. I'm hoping this will allow me to see my .30 holes in the target at 300 yards.

Do I want the 1/16th, 3/32nd or 1/8th dot reticle? The Sightron has a .1 dot and looks small to me so I'm concerned the 1/16 will be too small.

I'm currently using Burris Z-rings which put my 30mm Sightron tube 1" up from the base and the 60mm objective is 3.4mm above the barrel. The March is a 34mm tube and 56mm objective. Will the March 34mm x 1.1" give me enough barrel clearance or do I need to go to the 34mmx1.3"?

something does not sound right
I also have a sightron 10-50 scope, and have no problems at seeing 6 mm bullet holes at 300 yard.
could it be that your scope is not setup correctly??
eye focus? etc?
have someone adjust your scope to make sure that it is not setup wrong

I use the SIII 8-32. For practice I shoot a white Fclass clone target at 300yd, and have no problem seeing 223 holes unless the mirage is bad in which case little will help. I've checked other scopes to upgrade, but so far nothing has wowed me enough to switch. I do like my friends new Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60, but when I shot it the mirage was up which negated the higher mag. I like the smaller reticle dots in order to fine tune my point of aim.

For reference, I use Kelbly 34mm 1.2839 rings on top of a picatinny rail. I have approx .4inch clearance above the barrel to the lens cap.

I think you are out of luck. I dont believe anyone makes an optic that you can see bullet holes on a black background @ 600 yards.

You have to build that target by layering paint on it.

The best thing I liked about the March I had was I was finally able to sell it. Save yourself some money and buy a Nightforce Comp. You'll have a better scope.

I'd agree 100% about the bullet hole issue. Can you see them thru your spotting scope? At what X?

That March at 80x will be rarely used at 80 power, due to mirage conditions. You can see 6mm bullet holes in Black at 300yds with a NF 42x just as easily ( no mirage ), though all scopes will have difficulty when the mirage is up.

You know this comment about not using 80x on a March scope is rampant and is simply not true. It is a myth. The myth has been passed down from the day March came out with it. Remember when NF came out with the 42x? Oh my, no one could possibly use that much magnification. When we started in F class 25x was all you needed. Things change, March scopes are wonderful scopes. If you don't like them no problem, just buy something else. Lots of great scopes out there.

We have shot for 4 years with the 8-80's and the bulk of our matches are shot at 80. Light mirage, heavy mirage or medium mirage. You get used to it. If the target will not resolve to your liking turn the scope down a little.
The Senior and women's F class Palma record (450-28x )is held by a March scope shot at 80x. If you don't like high magnification scopes no problem, but no more myths please.

You must shoot at a lot different place then us. I have looked through the March many times here in PA and at Ohio. I could not shoot at 80x. I can't even shoot at 55x on my Competition which is way clearer then a March. I very rarely shoot on 42x with my BR. Too much haze and mirage at 1000. When hazy it is also dark. Also when the target is dancing you will chase bad shots in BR unless your gun tracks 100% and you trust it. I seriouly doubt if you can't see the holes with a 10x50 Sightron that a 80x March is going to let you see them. The Sightron is a very bright and clear scope. Matt

Shark you are exactly correct. I have shot my friends alot in competitions and I always have it on 80x. I bet I haven't turned it down but 2 times. I have never in the last 15 years turned my NF BR's off of 42x except to find the target. I shoot here in central pa,Willamsport, Mifflin Co., Reade Range, South Fork, St.Thomas, Ridgway. I can not say about shooting a 80x in the south but here in pa I have no problem with it. Just my observation.

Sightrons are good scopes, NF Comps are good scopes so are March and many other brands. My post is not intended to say which is better. We would probably never agree which is best, it is very subjective. Maybe Bench Rest is somewhat different but a blanket statement that 80x is unusable is simple incorrect. That is the part I was addressing.

I've never looked through a March, but I don't get the idea that mirage and magnification are somehow linked. They're not. Hiding the mirage by dialing down magnification until you can't see it is not the same as making it go away. If your target is flickering, don't you want to be able to see it?

Maybe I'm alone, but I set magnification based primarily on field of view and clarity of the rings. If I'm most comfortable at 40x, for example, what do I care if the target starts to dance?

I have two March 10-60 with 1/8 MOA dot reticle. I believe a 1/16 could work, anything smaller you'd loose against the black target. I practice regularly at the 300-yard line and I can see the hole of my 308 and 260AI just fine. However, when you start getting into the 10 ring regularly it is difficult to see two shots that are close. I solved that problem by using the Shoot-C targets that are exactly 2.85", the size of the 10 ring.

I made a target that has extra thick lines so I can see them clearly from 300 yards. I print them on my home printer then stick the SHoot-C in the center. Here's what they look like before and after.

I shoot a March-X 5-50X56 with the MTR-2 reticle. The dimensions that you mention are for the crosshair with Dot reticle. I suggest to you that for the F-class game, you will be better served with the MTR-2 reticle, but it's your choice.

At 10X, the center dot in the MTR-2 is 1/4 MOA across. I run my March at 40 or 50X depending on the phase of the Moon. At 40X, that makes that center dot 1/16MOA and at 50X, it's 1/20 MOA. It's very small, but it allows me to be very surgical in the placement of the reticle on the target. When I have trouble finding the dot on the target, I turn on illumination.

I shoot in south Texas, where mirage is a way of life. I never go below 40X.
