Maple Stock - Worth It?

It seems like for actions, triggers and barrels I have a pretty good feel of worth or at least can look up something close to get an idea. I’ve been wanting a high quality grained maple gun for awhile and have come across this. What I struggle with though, is how do you put a value on a piece of wood like this? It’s a decent action with a custom barrel that should be a good shooter, but I’m curious if I’m crazy for considering spending double the money for a pretty stock.

Wow, that is really pretty!!! Sorry, I can’t answer your question, I buy shooting guns only…. As a woodworker though, that sure is pretty and if I had some wood like that, I’d make my wife and daughter something really nice. :)

That wasn’t meant to be derogatory in any way. I don’t have the skills or tools to make stocks…

That's the prettiest maple stock I have ever seen. If I was in the market, there would be no question.

My thought is if Doan Trevor made a rifle that looked like that, it'd be worth at least $5K.

Was a time when good maple was easy to find and pretty affordable, not no mo. I like working with it, makes a very pretty stock when done up right. Not a big fan of the light colour like that, prefer it darkened.

I look at blanks from time to time. Good figure is pricey even before it’s made into a stock.

That said, a good chassis can run 500-1500, HS or B&C run 350-450, McM run 600-900. ALL of those can be had any day of the week…

Your not just paying for that beautiful wood but more for the workmanship and that one looks like somebody knew what they’re doing. I’d get pics of the barrel channel and action inletting. Going to guess it is as well done as the rest which indicates the high level of detail involved.. Man, it’s pretty!!

Without a $ figure, I can’t give an accurate opinion. That isn’t just a pretty stock. Think of it as a piece of art. On the open market, that stock should fetch $1500-2000. Some British Lords or Saudi Princes wouldn’t hesitate a second to pay three times that.

Beautiful piece of quilted maple there.
I'd venture to say the stock is easily worth $2000-$2500.
To make a stock like that first you'd have to find a chunk of quilted big enough, that alone is gonna be tough to do.
Then it has to be cut and shaped, add in inlet pillars and bedding and finishing.
Ya might ought pull the trigger!!

You will not find a higher quality maple stock than that one.

Thanks for the input all of you, it helped with my decision. Always wanted a stock like this and they don’t show up often so I moved on it and even got the price down a little $2655 out the door. Was on gun broker so didn’t want someone to snag it on me which is why I left some details out. It’s a Sako L579 with 2 custom barrels (308 and 243). Excited to see it in person. Now on to finding the right scope lol

Also this will be shot. I don’t buy guns to be safe queens.
