Making Brass from other cases.

LA50SHOOTER

Sworn To Protect The Constitution.
I'm looking for some solid advice before I proceed ahead. (2 part question)

- Here's the situation.

- I have a couple of older rifles that I want to get some decent brass for.

Is it okay to neck-up 257 Roberts (New Nosler brand) to 0.284 and fire-form them in a 7 x 57 Ackey Imp. chamber, provided I seat the bullet to where I'm say 0.010 into the lands to keep things not only lined-up but to preclude headspace issues ?

- Also, can I neck this 257 Roberts (New Nosler Brass) down to 6mm / .243 caliber and use it for a .244 / 6mm Remington (Skim pass neck turned if required at necks after neck down and mandrel pass) ? - Again, with a bullet seated 0.010 into the lands to maintain headspace & line-up.

- I have die sets for both aforementioned calibers and I'm sure that someone may in fact comment that I should just get 6mm Remington brass & 7 x 57 Mauser brass.
- I have done that already, the main caliber that I'm working to get better brass for is the .244 Remington (6 mm Rem.) The rifle was built before Remington came out with the 6mm Remington, so it was a early gun and has a minimum chamber and I'd like to have something more than just the Winchester brand brass that I have in-hand as an option & figured I'd give the Nosler Brass a try. (And I'm not really enthused about trying Hornady's brass offering in this caliber).

Thanks in Advance - Ron -

I used Norma 7×57 Mauser brass for my 6AI. Ran it through a 6mm Rem size die, skim neck turned maybe .0005" (Norma necks are super consistent) then fire formed.
They have 7 firings at +3300 fps with 105 Hybrid and primer pockets are still tight.

More than a few years ago, well before getting into F-Class, I had a 6mm Rem A.I. and a .257 Roberts A.I. Years and years ago I read an article by Jon R. Sundra about using Norma 7 x 57 brass necked down to 6mm and it would increase powder capacity by about a grain. So I bought some and did exactly that. AND I did get more powder capacity in it. So later, when I got a 257A.I. I did the same thing. Excellent move. They both worked without a hitch..

Rws makes 7x57 brass- best you can buy. Your thoughts on how to do them are spot on

I've been trying to get either 7 x 57 or 6.5 x 57 through Huntington's with little success. - By chance Dusty, do you know of any other place(s) to look for RWS here in the U.S. or possibly Canada ?

Thanks Much for the replies Gentlemen.

Dusty, - Thank You - I'll check & see, and I appreciate the information. - It'd be nice if RWS could see benefit in providing their products to the U.S. market.

Again, - I appreciate your feedback.

Seems like all we get over here is overstock when they mistakenly ship some over. I bought a pile of 375 brass over in africa. Its like remington brass to them

I sent an E-mail to Rebel Gunworks to see if there was a way to get any unprimed RWS sent over, and if so the requirements to be met to do so. - For a hunting rifle 60-100 rounds of RWS brass should last a good long time if proper care is taken.

Just to follow up, - I received an E-mail reply back from Rebel Gunworks in Australia. - Unfortunately, they Do Not export brass to the U.S. was the reply that I received.

So, onward with what is available is how I'll proceed.

Thanks to all those who chimed in and contributed.

A second technique that can be used by itself or in conjunction with a jammed bullet is to create a "false shoulder". When the neck is sized down, adjust the die so that the unsized portion of the neck is what you're setting the headspace on. In other words, the step down from the unsized portion of the neck becomes like miniature shoulder for the case to headspace off of. It's especially useful when reforming cases requires the shoulders to be moved forward.

LA50SHOOTER,
I have been off the forum for the most part the last three or four years but there use to be a member in here by the name JayCutright
He was a hell of a nice guy to deal with, he shot a lot of .300win and wildcats off that case and sold me RWS brass several times in .300win now idk if that’s all he had or if he had a outlet for RWS brass but if he’s still a member give him a shout

I'd get PPU brass from Grafs in 7X57.

We aren't talking a benchrest gun i'm taking it.

No, not a Benchrest rifle, but all are older Mauser Action rifles that were built in the late 50's and early 60's back before Remington introduced the 22-250 (was known as the 22 Varminter back then) and the 6mm Rem. (was known as the 244 Rem.). - This being said, I feel the need to use good quality reloading components in them. - These rifles will eventually go on the "Selling Block" probably here on this forums classifieds section. - I've already had the Bolts Bushed by @carlsbad as I feel that this upgrade provides a great value to each of the rifles. - I have the die sets to load the ammunition and my intentions are to spend enough time to find a decent shooting load with each (at 100 yards) and provide a test target along with the dies and the brass & bullets that remain after they are each put through a testing phase. - These are "old-school" rifles with original G.R. Douglas barrels (with the exception of the 308 Win which was built in the mid 1980's) that are in excellent shape with hand crafted stocks that exhibit quality from years ago when some of us lived in a different age.
