Making 30br brass **video**

We are iced in here in Texas and I'm bored. So I decided to make a little video on how I make 30br brass.
I shot the whole thing on my smart phone, and then uploaded it to my youtube channel.

Hope you guys like it.

Thanks for posting. Nice to see you can get the right thickness on one pass. I've done it in stages with the same mandrel and getting it right can be frustrating at times. I will try it in one pass on my next batch.

Hi Wes,

Why did you decide to go with cutting all the material in a single pass/setting? I did this with first set of 30BR brass I prepared. When I talked to some of the 6ppc guys at Denton, they encouraged me to set up and do it with 2 different passes - the first taking 75-80% of the material and the second taking off the balance going extremely slow. I purchased a second turner but have never turned another set of brass for comparison. The good thing about 30br brass is that it doesn't wear (easily). Have you tried two steps by any chance? Thanks, Tim

One observation... you might want to try using the K&M expander mandrel riser window. While the increased visibility of the process is nice, what really makes this item awesome is that it raises the mandrel itself up into the range where your press is making its peak mechanical leverage i.e. closer to the cam-over point. The difference in the amount of effort involved in expanding case necks even for regular neck turning i.e. expanding .308 Win brass is almost unbelievable. For something like this - necking up from 6mm to .30 cal in one pass, I bet you'd love it!

Tim,
I used to use two cutters like you describe (main cut then a final cut), but with the blue box brass, the necks are only around .0113" - .0115" thick when expanded. I found it more time consuming and I didn't see any benefit over just going slow, and making two passes. If I needed to take .002" or more, I would certianly make 2 cuts. Some of the thinner PPC brass I make as much as 3 cuts. My general rule of thumb is if it needs cutting more than .0015" per cut, you divide it up.
