Me and one of my 3 sons drew bull tags for Maine this year week of Oct 9-14th. I drew zone one he drew zone 2. IMO these are two of the top 3-4 zones in Maine.
It worked out that I found a outfitter that had one of eight campers for rent in zone one 12 miles from zone two. The campsite was located 8 miles west of Claton Lake in the Northern Maine woods 70-75 miles from the closest paved road.
We had an incredible trip. My son Tom shot his opening morning after calling for only 6 minutes.
Me and my youngest son Jes scouted from Saturday the 7th and 8th.
We saw 16 moose before taking this big bull on Thursday morning at 6:21 am. It had a 51” spread and dressed 818 lbs. I shot it with my 28 Nosler with my loads, 180 gr VLDs with ADG brass and H-1000. My son used a 7mag shooting my hand loads with 175 Nosler Partitions. The bull went 20’. My son Tom that shot the first bull used his 308 shooting hand loads using 165 gr Game Kings and dropped it in its tracks shooting only 25’ from the bull. We also killed 7 roughed grouse.
Here are some pictures of the area and critters.
