Maine Moose Hunt

Congratulations on a OIL tag. What caliber/bullet are you planning to use? I’m going after moose this fall in Newfoundland. I’m using a 300 win mag with a hornady 180 gr interlock psp at 3080 FPS from a Browning ABolt. I hope you get a good one!

Finally pulled Maine Moose lottery tag for bull moose zone 1 after 22 yrs. Website showed 23,000+ applicants. Little over 3000 tags up for grabs of which only 8% allotted to non residents like me.
22 Years isn't to bad. I know a few residents that have 35+ years no tag. My buddy has 36 years as a nonresident no tag. I was lucky and drew in 16 years. I will be hunting zone 5 this year as a sub permitted with a buddy of mine. You drew a great zone, just got to hope for some cool weather with no wind and you will have a great hunt. Do you have a guide? If not let me know. I know some very successful moose guides in the north zones. Good luck with your hunt.

I booked Allagash Guide Services in Allagash Maine. Otherside of St John River is Canada. My son is going with a Tikka 3x Lite with Vortex pst 2.5-10×44mm sfp scope in 300win mag with 168gr Barnes TTSX handloads. 3 shot group at 300yds 1.5". He's also taking Marlin 35rem levergun with 200sp for days in thick woods. I'm deciding between custom Mauser 338win mag with Kahles 1.5-6×42mm scope and 210gr partition handloads or Winchester pre64 in 375 Ruger with Shilen Select Match ss bbl and Athlon Cronus BTR 1-6 x24mm scope and Hornady 250gr gmx.
Good luck in Newfoundland for moose.
Outfitter's wife pulled bull tag and is using 3006 and limiting her shots to under 250yds. Don't know her load.

It took me 20 yrs to get a non-res Maine moose tag and I didn't exactly end up in the most productive area. However, I was very excited to go and worked up a load using a 402gr Hammer bullet in my Marlin 1895. We literally walked all day long, only stopping long enough to call and observe before climbing all over the place again.

I took this guy at first legal shooting light. He took two hits in the vitals and dropped. Not much walking on that day. LOL

Nice trophy, where were your hits and how far were you?

I was 125yds when I shot at him standing broadside. He took a few steps at the shot and I fired two more shots as quickly as I could. When he was skinned, there were two holes centered in the lungs. I apparently threw one shot wild. I was so excited that I'm kind of surprised that any of the bullets landed on the moose. LOL

He had never seen a fully loaded .45-70 with a mono or hard cast bullet. It is a straight line stopper. I used to have a Marlin with a peep but never got to use it on anything.
Again, congradulations on your moose. The Maine success rate is not that high.
