Magnum primers???

I see alot of 6BR shooters are using magnum primers. Is the reason for this the ball powders listed?
Reason I ask is I am putting together information for building a 6BR and reading information regarding this caliber. Since I have 9k of the CCI 400's, I would like to know if I need to get magnums for the 6BR.

The CCI 400 primers have thinner cups than the CCI BR4 and CCI 450 mag primers. Many people are running very high pressures in the 6BR and need the thicker primers.

The mag primers often give lower Standard Deviations on velocity when using ball powders as well.

My best loads for my 6mmBR are with VV N540 and the CCI450 SR Magnum primers. These combinations give excellent ES and SD with bullets in the 95gr to 115gr range. I have also tried other powder/primer combinations from the 6mmBR Cartridge Guide found on the www.6mmbr.com Home Page without difficulties. In all cases, I started low and worked up carefully in .3gr steps until pressure signs such as sticky bolt lift or flattening primers indicated excessive pressure but I have not experienced any primer failures with the combinations shown in the Guide, many of which include non-magnum primers. I have found this cartridge guide and the others invaluable when looking for a place to start with a new chambering.
Good luck with your project.

I have always or mostly used fed 205 Match primers in my 6br and dasher with no problems what so ever. I think each rifle is different and you just have to see what works best for you. Lee

As stated above, the 6BR can run very high pressures, and the thicker cup of the magnum primers helps to keep from blanking a hole at the firing pin strike point. A lot will depend on the action that you are using, and the size of the firing pin hole in the bolt face. Stock Remington's usually run about 0.075" or a bit larger, and I have personally had issues with blanking primers using that size pin hole. I got the bolts bushed and the pin diameter reduced to 0.062", and the problem went away. Completely. No craters or holes, with exactly the same load and components. So, using a custom action with a small pin OD, you might have no problems. Put the hot non-magnum primer loads on a factory action and you may very well have issues. I use CCI450's exclusively in my 6 Dasher. They were blanking until I got the pins bushed.

I recently switched to cci mag primers for everything.

LIKE A MEMBER SAID....."It took me a lot of shooting over a crono" to convince me that they were better in my gun and I don't kno why they work, but they do. They are all that I use now....RL 15, Varget, 4895, 8208, you name it......CCI Mag 450
