Magnum definition

I always just thought of it as being any cal up sized. I can only talk of pistols.
22lr to a 22 mag
38 to a 357

Any mag I know is a bigger version of what ever.

I think of 'Magnum' as a title given by marketers. Try 256 Winchester Magnum vs. 25-06, is the Magnum bigger or more powerful?

It was yet another shitty car by dodge too.
They need to release a new one based on the Charger, a Hellcat Magnum so it can live up to the name.

I thought magnums were for gentlemen who believed they needed oversized contraceptive devices...

Edit: to answer the question, I've always considered "magnums" to be the .53" and larger boltfaces.

I think the magnum term is an accurate definition but with the larger magnum cases today. Today I really don't see the 264, 7 RM, 300 or 338 WM as true Magnums. The next level of Magnums seem more appropriate as magnums. The 26,28,30 Noslers and 7, 300, 338 RUMS to me are today's Magnums. There are more obviously but that case size seems to represent the Magnums of today. It's just an opinion of mine as the 284/280 comes close to the 7RM. The 06 is approaching the 300 WM today. Not nearly the separation as back in the early years before all the newest powders arrived amplifying the performance of the non-magnuns. Then there are the CheyTacs, the highest level of magnum. Those last two generations of Magnums IMO really define the Super Magnums.

"Magnum"
A pretty ambiguous, or even meaningless word as used in rifle cartridges.

You for damned sure won't see me "building" a "magnum".;) jd

Magnum is a word not a reference to size, for the most part.

17 HMR must be more powerful than the 300 Pegasus because after all the 17 HMR has the word "Magnum" in it's name !

If I had to define what a real magnum rifle cartridge should be, I'd say a minimum of 3,500 foot pound of energy at the muzzle.

There is a chart with different cartridges listed in progression from those that give longest barrel life to those that usually give a life span of 1000 rounds and less. Somewhere in the list you could establish a reference point that you feel comfortable with and that those over would be magnum and those before it non magnum. It is a factor to consider if you are looking for the most barrel life. I do not recall where I saw the list but look around and I'm sure you will find it.
