Magnetospeed

I keep looking at the positive posts on the Magnetospeed and am considering buying one. I have limited experience with the chronograph and they work ok but are a pain to use on a public range. I notice it is listed as V3 which I expect means the third generation configuration. Is this configuration mature or can we expect the fourth generation soon?

Haven't heard of a V4 coming out. My V2 works great on a public range , and must add relatively simple. They have come out with a Sporter model recently.

If u only use it once in a while I would get the sporter model, I have it and it is fast to put on and works great. Had it on everything from 22-250 to 338 Lapua Mag with no problems of not reading, just keep it tight on barrel and u will love it!

I have the sporter model, and like it well. Easy to use. No fooling with a table, or shades as with other models. I have some people come over at dusk, just to use mine.
Though I don't use it everytime I shoot, but in load development it's handy. I have mounted it on sporter barrels to 1.125 barrels.

I have the first version with an updated attachment system and it works perfectly for my needs, which is to confirm velocity and ES for handloads and build drop charts.

Oh my. Don't get or use one. They'll make your groups go to hell, your POI go high, low, left or right. It acts as a "tuner" and will destroy accuracy. On top of all that, where it clamps to the barrel, it'll change the heat distribution and make the rifling wear at faster. Extensive use will make the last 1/2 inch of your barrel fall off. Get a Chrony so you'll have something to shoot in between your target and bench. It's kind of neat to see them blow up with a 250 grain slug. Plus, you'll get some all knowing smiles from the other shooters on the line as they watch you carefully set up your unit then curse the clouds.

Having said all that. I bought one when they first came out, sold it and now have V3 and am extremely happy with its performance and accuracy. I still do mourn the killing of my old Chrony. :'( Some idiot shot it with a crossbow bolt. ::)

I have a V3 and am very pleased with it. I shoot for groups while using the MS. All barrels its been mounted to are 1" or larger in diameter and one has a brake mounted. To avoid damaging the mounnting strap I use blue painters tape under and ahead of the strap. The tape allows for a tighter non slip grip and would really be useful on tapered barrels.

HaHa. Loved your post, Hogpatrol.

I still have my Version 1 and I am even able to use it on a suppressor - with a little modification to the bayo and a sensitivity adjustment.

You forgot to warn him that adding the bayonet on the rifle in NY and California will result in a crime! You know, a big dull polymer tacticool lightweight electronic bayonet! SCARY STUFF! ::)

I use mine while shooting groups with a bench rifle in 22PPC and it doesnt even move POI or group size.

The V3 will fit your needs just fine. Yes it is the 3rd generation. It will be a reliable unit for you for a long time, as long as you follow the directions and don't shoot it.

I got the sporter model. Just replaced the junky plastic case with a pistol case. No problems working with single strings measurements using a notebook at the range

I bought the sporter model recently it gives good data and it's very convenient to use especially on ranges with other people but it does change poi and effects the groups a little as well. On a 16inch sporter barrel I just finished building caused the shots to go about 5.5 inches high from point of aim. The heavy barrel guns I have saw about half to an inch high shift in impact. So group testing without it attached is probably best and then I attach and then shoot my rounds to get velocity data on the load.

I have shot 1000 yards on 1 MOA Targets, without removing the MagnetoSpeed, and still managed good accuracy. That being said, most of the time I do the same. Shoot for group size. Then once I narrow down the load the weapon the likes, I shoot 5 through and get my velocities. Then once I have a 20-30 degree temp drop, I do it again, until I have a velocity - temp range so that you have a temp table and understand how your load/powder is going to change with temp changes.

Where you live? The guy that shot your Chrony must also live near me!!

Depends on the length of the brake. They are not for use with brakes more than 3 inches.

Good to know, i did not know that, now to measure.....
