MagnetoSpeed Sporter on an 28mm(1.10") diameter barrel.

Hello form here,
I think to buy (a special offer for this model on one shop on my contry) the Sporter version of MagnetoSpeed.
My rifle had 28mm(1.10") barrel diameter.

The specs declare that the maximum diameter acceptable for the Sporter are 1" and the Magnetospeed customer support confirm me this.

So anyone on this Forum had used the Sporter with barrel like or fatter of the mine?

Thanks

I think it would work, but have never had it on a barrel that large. However, it comes with 2 rubber spacers, a think and thin. If the thin still held the unit off to far to pickup, I would remove the thin spacer and just use a couple layers of electrical tape to protect your barrel and provide some grip. Hopefully someone with direct experience will contribute.

I use mine with a 0.920" barrel with a .224" hole in it :)
That puts the little 224 bullet surface 0.348" from the barrel surface (O.D.).
A 308 with a 1.1" barrel with a .312" hole in it would put the bullet surface 0.394" from the barrel O.D., or about 0.046" further away.
The 308 projectile might even be easier to detect.
Tuners, muzzle devices, or a suppressor might complicate mounting.
I've found a couple wraps of tape to help with slippage.

Look at the bottom of your thread here under "similar threads". (Sporter for 1.25" barrels). *Gabe22BR* says it works for him. Maybe reach out to him for more specifics. Just a thought.

I'm ordering one tonight. after reading these.

Hello, yes I've read all about Sporter and heavy barrels on the net, some guys have make modification adding some little neodymium magnet for alevate the magnetic field and the power of the tasductors of the Sporter.

The spacers are for thinner barrels. Like I have a Christensen Arms Mesa with a tiny light-sporter barrel contour and actually had to use both spacers so the bullet wouldn’t hit the Magnetospeed. It isn’t meant to double them up, but after some adjusting I got it to work.

They aren't as critical as the instructions say but still, they need to be close. I just don't remember the numbers but I've used mine on .900- 1.250 bbls in 6mm and 30. I do use tape rather than the provided shims...fwiw

Hello!
Thanks for this feedback!

Hi!
Yes some type of protection Is needed, also for prevent the support melting.
I think that the silicone tape are great for this application.

There are several adjustments you will need to make for correct readings.

Assure the bayonet is parallel to bullet track.

Get the correct distance from the centerline of the bore to the top of the bayonet.

Adjust the sensitivity.

Get the correct position of the bayonet from the muzzle (fore and aft)

Size of bullet (bullet mass) may change the positions and settings between different calibers. On my 5.56mm it is more sensitive to getting everything correct than it is with my 6.5mm. Once you have the setup working on a particular rifle what bullet you use will make little difference if any.

This has been my experience with the sporter. I'm making it seems more complex than it really is. I'm sure it will work for you with a little tinkering.
