Magnetospeed optional mounting?

I am looking for an optional way to mount a Magnetospeed sporter. I am wanting to be able to do load development while using the Magnetospeed but with it not attatched to the barrel. I will mostly be using it on a B&C stock and MDT chassis. Both have 26 inch barrels and picatinny mounts under forearm. What is everyone using and what would my best option be? Thanks for any help.

By the time ya buy all that stuff might as well get a Lab Radar.. My Magneto speed works just fine attached to the barrel.

Thank you guys.

@1badgoat I think I could make that pretty easy. Simple and effective. I'm sure I have a couple rings and picatinny rail sections laying around. Should be able to get a piece of 1 inch aluminum tubing pretty easy too. Thank you. If I don't like how that turns out, I'll try one of the others listed.

@TheOtherZilla I have been looking into the Labradar because I would rather have it over the Magnetospeed but most places I see it for sale list it for around $550. That is several hundred more than any of the options listed above. Even if I was to sell the Magnetospeed and put that towards a Labradar it would be considerably more. Do you know of anywhere that has the Labradar for a decent amount cheaper? My magnetospeed works just fine now attatched to the barrel for getting velocities but I don't think its optimal for doing load development with it attached to the barrel. I'm not saying that it make a difference because I don't have any proof and haven't tested it either, but if a tuner on the end of a barrel makes a difference by making slight adjustments then I don't see how the Magnetospeed hanging on the end of the barrel wouldn't make a difference.

The MagnetoSpeed will move your point of impact but shouldn't affect your speed. Maybe I use mine a little different; I find a load and then strap the MagnetoSpeed on to see how fast it's going.

Consider this. You are using a bipod for load development. IMO not the best option for tight groups. Yes I am aware that there are shooters who do exceptionally well with a bipod at the range.. I am not one of them. My set up is a concrete bench at my local range, and a solid adjustable front rest. Plus a quality rear bag. IMO a bipod is not optimal for load development.

As for the cost. Magneto Speeds run from ~ $180 plus shipping and tax to ~$380. Add at least $100 to the mix for a mount [the Tubb is $170] and you are at around $300-$500 or so. All the Lab Radars I see are the same price. $559. So for $250 0r less you can get into a Lab Radar. I bet one would spend at least $250 on a scope or more and not blink an eye.
Pick yer poison.

I completely agree with bipods not being the best option for load development. Normally I have a bag rider attached to the picatinny rails on my stocks without flat bottoms when I do serious load development. On smaller calibers though I can consistently shoot pretty small off a bipod. I just recently posted a thread on the 6BR forum about my new 6BR with a pic of the first groups of load development out of it. I don't think the bipod was holding me back in that situation. I believe one group each in the .1's, .2's, and .3's. Definitely not saying I am capable of shooting in the .1's every time off a bipod but I do believe the tuning of the loads is what is holding it back from shooting small every time. I don't know for sure if the Magnetospeed hanging off the end would have changed those groups or not, but I would think that it would be enough to effect groups that small. I'm just trying to eliminate an unknown variable.

If I didn't currently have a Magnetospeed sporter then I would no doubt go with the Labradar. But if I can make this one work like I want with little to no cost then I will be more than happy keeping it. If I'm not satisfied with how it turns out then I will be putting it in the classifieds and be looking for a Labradar to go on sale somewhere. I imagine I would only be able to get around $125 for it. It's just the sporter version.

I would also recommend spending the money on a Labradar from the get go to someone looking to get a chrono. That is what I should have done from the beginning but I dont think it was out when I bought this. I have used a Labradar and do think they are superior. Thank you for the advice.

I've looked at these mounts before and it still seems to me like the magnetospeed could influence POI just by being so close to the path of the bullet. I thought I read somewhere where someone did a test and found the POI still seems to push away slightly from where the magnetospeed is mounted, though I've never tried this myself. I've only used mine strapped to the barrel the normal way and it absolutely has an effect on POI. For me it shifts high and left by over 2"@100 and even though the groups still seem tight I wouldn't trust any results other than velocity with one on. For what they are, they work great though. It just means I need to separate velocities and groups in my load development process. A Labradar certainly seems appealing sometimes...

I tried several ways to mount the sensor away from the rifle. Tripod would have worked but it put it out in front of the bench and adjusting would be tricky with a hot range. Tried to mount it off the front of the front rest, never got it so it was easy to use and if I wanted to use a bipod it wouldn't work. Ended up using a aluminum box I had kicking round. Added an adjustment knob to get the bayonet parallel to bore. The threaded rod with lock nut works well once adjusted for height. Every shot from a bipod or front rest requires I look to be certain it is lined up or I don't get a reading. Had to add a plywood extension to bench to be able to place rifle in normal location.

I see that some guys are attaching the bayonet to the top of a cheap front rest, like a caldwell.
