Mag Primer vs standard .223

I am new to reloading, I have been using cci400 and br-4 in my Ar-15 .223, i am all about accurcy, I have read talk about using the cci450 mag. primers, also the wolf primers, are these a better choice? I also now will be reloading .308 (AR-10).

Take your favorite load and run a primer test with 4 or more kinds of primer. We did this and the results were stunning. Primers make a HUGE difference.

Our load liked WOLF SRMs best. CCI BR primers wouldn't even hold MOA. It was a real eye openner to see how big of an impact primers can be on a load.

The CCI400 seems to be soft and thin when compared to the Rem 7 1/2. Not good for an AR15. Do NOT use Rem. 6 1/2 primers.

That being said. All I run through my R15 is CCI400 (hundreds of rounds). No misfires or piercings.

I can only use CCI 400s for light bullet loads. Heavy bullet loads will pierce in the heat.

Quite possible that you are correct. The heaviest I can shoot accurately is 69.

You want a thick cupped primer for high pressure loads. CCI 400s were not designed for the pressures of a 223, actually.

What does pierce in the heat mean??

The primer will be pierced by the firing pin and blow up in you face and inside your gun.

Happens worse when it is hot.

I used thousands of CCI400s in an AR without any problems. Softer than 450s or 7 1/2s? Yes, but not everything has to be run flat out. I believe I only backed off about 50fps from harder primers.

As far as 450s vs. Wolf vs. BR4 vs whatever....you will just have to test. It's all about lot numbers. You either have a good batch of primers or you don't. Wolf makes good primers and you *might* have a better chance of getting a good lot of them, but it isn't a sure thing. I've run 2 lots of them head to head with Remington 7 1/2 and CCI450 and there wasn't a dimes worth of difference between any of them.

I've heard and read lots of different stuff about using different primers and yes, with higher pressure loads the thicker cup primers are better but, you're giving yourself a false sense of security. A hot load is a hot load! I was talking to a rifle builder one day, which shoots competition too, and I asked him what primer he prefers and he said "any of them, whatever lights the fire!" Different info from different sources!

What? I've seen lots of primer piercings over the years. I've never seen any "blow up" in a gun or a guy's face.

You'll end up damaging your firing pin, and continued piercings from a damaged firing pin can etch and ruin your bolt face. But if you're not paying attention, you'll never notice that it's happening.

My post above is from personal experence. The CCI 400 started to flow into the firing pin hole, mid-range loads, Savage bolt action. Changing to Rem. 7 1/2 , same power charge, no flow. Yes, pressure may have been different from changing primers. Some good reading on primers> http://www.shootingtimes.com/2011/01/04/ammunition_st_mamotaip_200909/ And primer cup thickness > http://www.jamescalhoon.com/primers_and_pressure.php Internet info, take it for what its worth. Only way to know is, do your own testing. :)
