Made a case trimming mistake..

First time trimming cases and I thought I was going to trim them .005 and ended up at .05. It looks like an 1/8th inch. I'm not sure if "trimmed" is accurate at this point. I did a load development with them and it went fine so my question is since I did this to 40 cases, did I get lucky and is it dangerous if I keep using them?

No danger. Have you ever measured factory brass? They generally run short. The only negatives are bullet tension may vary once you settle on .005" for future cases, and there is a greater risk of creating a carbon ring just before the throat. I would mark the batch of cases as to trim length and be sure I do a little extra cleaning while the barrel is still warm before the carbon hardens.

Would I use regular barrel solvent on a Q tip or something to clean it?

I prefer a quality bronze brush ( Dewey, Pro-shot) saturated well with bore cleaner. The same size as you would run down the bore. A bore guide is a big plus. If you don't have, clean with muzzle slanted down until you get one. And never reverse the brush direction of travel while it's in the bore.

I've made worse trimming errors. Just segregate those cases and mark them. You may nor see any difference on the target as compared to the recommended trim length cases.

Won't comment on trimming errors since others have address that issue.

One inexpensive item you may want to consider acquiring is a Sinclair Chamber length gauge. For me it has significantly reduced the amount of trimming I have to do for most of my rifles even applying Sinclair's safety margin factor. By using this less than $10 tool I found that most of my rifle chambers are cut well beyond the published SAMMI specs. for max case length thus enabling me to trim a lot less.

Ok, thank you. I do have a bore brush and guide. I guess I'll stop going in both directions.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

You may have misinterpreted my post. You can run the brush both directions, just make sure the brush exits the muzzle before pulling back through. On the action end make sure the brush clears the bore guide end before pushing forward. If you ever forget to keep the brush wet and reverse it in a relatively dry bore, you will always remember the resulting experience.

Thanks for clearing that up. I believe what you described is what I have been doing.
