M96 Carl Gustafs Stads rebarrel???

Last spring I was shooting this nice old sporterized Swedish Mauser with a old Lyman peep sight and bead front sight at 675Y and hitting a 18" steel plate no problem. The barrel might be the original but cut to 18" and recontoured, I'm not sure what barrel it is.

Last two times out it shot horrible, I couldn't hit a 1 foot plate at 400Y at all, not even by luck. A few days ago I cleaned the barrel super good and tested it, 5" groups at 100Y now, darn! Must be shot out.

It's one of those rifles I don't want to put a bunch of money into, although the floor plate is engraved and the bolt is jeweled, as well the action is in great shape, so it does have some appeal to it. If I bought a decent barrel and had it installed it'd cost almost $700, ouch.

A guy I know gave me about 300 new 220 swift brass years ago. I thought it'd be a cool project to get a 8 twist barrel to shoot 80's and keep the irons as is. This would just be for shooting steel, well maybe a coyote here and there. 220S would feed well I think, I did some testing and they seemed to feed fine, and I prefer the lighter recoil of a 22 caliber.

Or see if I can find a new 6.5x55 barrel somehow.

Have any ideas to get something done a little cheaper?

Anybody want to trade a new Shilen 9 twist 17 cal blank for a 22 8ish twist blank?

Don't even think about a 220 swift in a small ring pre 98 Mauser .
You can sell the rifle , install a 6.5-55 barrel or a 250-300 or 35 Rem , 257 Roberts
The action may be strong enough but it's not safe enough for a hi pressure cartridge .
The old swedes like a long heavy bullet , if you were shooting light weight bullets try the heavy round nose .

What Ggmac said. 96 Sweeds also tend to be very soft. I've seen plenty with bolt set back.

Check out Lothar-Walther. They sell drop in barrels for Swedes in 6.5x55 and could probably do any other caliber as well. That said, I do agree that high pressure rounds in a M96 action isn't good, though I have seen some interesting chamberings that I'd be afraid to pull the trigger on without a long piece of string.

Send it to ERShaw for about $300 they'll install a barrel . Excellent company and great deals for a hunting gun

I didn't think about the pressure aspect, thanks guys. I shoot reloads through this rifle and have the 6.5x55's backed down to 2500 fps with 140's.

I suppose I could do the same thing with 220S but I wouldn't/couldn't sell the rifle later if it was in that chambering, which would be a downside at some point I bet. All that free brass sitting in the bin though. Been loading for 45 years so I can handle downloading pressures if I decide to go with 220S. Still get a easy 3000 fps with 45,000 PSI???

Great idea, thanks.
