M40A3?

Hey everyone,

I was recently reading about the M40A3 sniper rifle and the article said it consisted of:
-Schneider #7 match SS barrel at 25 inches
-Remington 700 short action, house tuned by marine armorers
-McMillan A4 stock
-D.D. Ross trigger guard
-Unertl 10x scope
-D.D. Ross recoil lug
-D.D. Ross scope base
-Badger Ordnance scope rings

But I've been looking at recent pictures of the M40A3 and fluted barrels with suppressors mounted, Badger Ordnance M5 floor plate and Schmidt & Bender 3-12 PM II scopes seem to have become the standard. Can someone please clear this up and provide a recent components list for the M40A3 in good detail?

Thanks.

Yes - those are the basic specs of the M40-A3 as originally produced by the MTU - essentially the same as the M40A1 with a McMillan A4. However, Afghanistan and Iraq have shown the need for some adaptation of the basic design spec package. Plus, Unertl hasn't made the USMC scope for many many years - USO has made it as the MST-100 but not in a while. S&B partnered with Premier Reticles to produce a variable scope to Marine specs. The Corps is experimenting with fluted barrels and suppressors to adapt to the demands of battle in the Middle East. Finally, Iron Brigade Armory and others are offering some of their rifles for T&E in theater.

Give George Gardner at GA Precision a call or email. Most of the gunsmiths working there were MTU armorers who built M40A3's and can give you much more information.
