M1a super match stock question

Silver $$ Contributor
Hi, I picked this up new from a guy. Its a Springfield armory M1a super match. But, this one doesn’t have the black McMillan stock on it. It has a heavy black textured composite I’m guessing stock on it. It also has the butt plate from a m1 garand. I was thinking it was a T44E4 stock of some type?? All the T44E4s I see are wood. Is this a rare stock?? Any help would be great. Thanks. David

What little I saw of these at matches had a heavy wood stock that didn't look like that but I'm talking 15+ years ago. Maybe it changed but check the CMP forum and they'd know better. Just curious is it bedded? A better shot of the grip and forearm would help as those kind of stood out on those heavy NM stocks but again the CMP forum or usrifleteams.com National Match Competition forum.

Also is it a Springfield made Supermatch or a Springfield M1A made up to a Supermatch? Do you 'ave zee papers?

It doesnt have the supermatch shaped stock. Look up the mcmillan or the “big red” if you want to see the correct shape. Its way fatter in the middle under the action.

I have a M1a mcmillan stock at home. When put next to each other they look very close. I’m sure there are small differences. It is hard to tell. From my understanding of it. It is a rear lugged Springfield armory receiver built up with GI and NM parts and a Krieger barrel. It is bedded and the rear lug has a set screw in it. I’ll try looking around the CMP and maybe call Springfield armory.

The garand buttplate was put on from the factory iirc in the 90’s when usgi buttolates ran out or got hard to find and cmp changed service rifle rules to allow them
An injection moulded stock is not what came on a supermatch
Should be fiberglass McMillan
Injection molded stocks can’t be stiffened up for sling shooting like a usgi fiberglass.
Should have a heavy pattern barrel, nm front and rear sights, unitized gas system, and should be bedded
Modifications made by competitors were addition of lugs either single on rear or double front and rear, and gluing the upper hand guard to the gas system and band

Someone swapped the stock or it’s not a supermatch

^^This^^

And don’t confuse a heavy pattern barrel for a medium weight
Heavy is full diameter all the way under the hand guard and
Heavy pattern uses an oversized op rod guide

Going back to the Hay Day of M1A's there were Many Match Grade M1A's Built by Many People .

Super Match was a Springfield Armory of Illinois. They used a lot of investment Casting Parts and Rebuilt Op-Rods.
The HV Barrel and HV Stock Wood or Fiber does Not = Super Match

Ok. I’m not debating it being a super match. Call it what you want. I’m asking about the stock. I have not seen one like this.

To a purist I think they would call out it's not a super match without the super match stock. Unless it left Springfield this way someone switched out the stock for what ever reason. Ask me about my BHP with NO serial number. Again some research will clarify this for you. If you sell it at some point and it's not the original stock it may affect the price. Happened to me with a 40X with an after market bolt.

FYI, I had the BHP stamped to be right

Sucks to hear about your 40x. The stock is over sized and kind of looks like a t44e4 and a McMillan. I remember the super match coming from Springfield with a oversized wood or McMillan stock. I had them years ago and wanted one again. I was going to build one. I have a lot of parts for one plus the McMillan stock. I came across this rifle for a pretty good deal. Has heavy Krieger barrel GI and NM parts. So I though of just restocking it with the McMillan and keeping all the parts.

Had one of these at Gander Mountian used guns about 2 years ago. To confirm I removed the stock to check the serial numbers matched. They did.

Then you know that a “supermatch” was simply a trim package built to a price point
The best guns in my opinion were built by guys like you or USMC and Amu armorers on the side
My “supermatch” is a double lugged gun built by Chicken Mac

This stock is quite bigger then the McMillan. You can really feel it in the forend. You can see it in the pic also.

Yes, I had three Smith Double Lug Receivers and one Clint Fowler double Lug weld on .
I should have kept one !
Then I never truly fall in love with Rifles I have built .
Thanks
