M1A in 6mm norma BR

Working on a conversion, heard you guys were the people to talk to. I'm having trouble finding a smith who does m1a barrels in different calibers. Also, any experienced converters out there who ran into snags while converting a semi to 6mm norma BR that would like sharing.

Looking for facts not hearsay, also I know that I could just go with an AR platform, but wheres the fun in that? ;D

You certainly march to the beat of a different drummer :-)

My friend spent a ton of cash trying to get a 6mm BR to feed in an AR and finally gave up on the project. He has a drawer full of modified magazines that almost worked!

The same cartridge in an M14 may pose an even greater challenge. Magazines are the biggest issue, at least they were for the AR. Accuracy is a no brainer.

I would think that the size of the gas hole in the bbl would be one challenge to determine. Starting small and then drilling up would be the way to go.

Modifying the mags to feed is your hill to climb. Short fat cartridges have a problem with bolt guns much less an M1A. I would want to look at Gary Elieso's mags and feed ramps for his bolt gun mods and see if there was anything I could borrow or modify.

I am afraid that you are on your own with this radical of a mod to an M1A.

Maybe you should look at a modified 243 or a 6mm XC. That cartridge would be a lot easier to get to feed. The more 308 like the case is the better off you may be.

Just my .02 here.

Best person to talk to would be Robert Whitley. He makes the 6 turbo and 6 ar. He might know what it takes and what you have to do to make it work. Keep us posted on how this goes. I like the gun but not too big on the 308.

Feeding is going to be the problem...and not a small one! The only way anyone has had any sucess getting a 6BR to feed, to my knowledge, is with single stack or center feed magazines. You'd have to find some way to get one of those, such as an Accuracy International or Elieso, adapted to a M1A and go from there. No small task!
