M1 Garand recoil ?

A club I belonged to back in the late 70's was huge with
the CMP program. We had 6 Garands and cases of LC
68 ammo for them. It may have been that lot of ammo but
compared to a typical PA. deer rifle, the kick was mild.
 
As long as we are posting Garand pics - here's one of mine in full recoil. They shoot pretty easy, but the steel buttplate gets sore after awhile. I am 5'10" for reference. Note my thumb along side of the receiver:
