M1 Garand Ping

Been a Garand Collector since 99. Shot my first Garand Clinic at Ft. Knox, Scott Mountain KD Range, in 1988 with my Dad. He is US Army Retired, 19Kilo Heavy Armor 26 yrs and a Vietnam Vet. My Grandfather was a WWII Vet, and they both carried the Garand at some point in their Service.

In basic training, prior to getting shipped off to Korea in early '52...I has an M1 with an apparent sear problem. I fired one and the other seven followed like I was using a BAR. Caught everyones attention, ) especially one of the" D.I's". He said. let me have that ! He installed another clip and same thing happened. It was good for a laugh. It went back to the "smiths", and they gave me another.

When I got my DCM Garand in1995, my dad and I went out to shoot it. Dad was a WW 2 vet and had not handled an M1 since his discharge but he still remembered how to do it & warned me about M1 thumb. Unfortunately, he had a severe stroke a few months later that left him unable to talk and pretty much paralyzed. To this day I am happy that I let him shoot it first and will always remember the ear to ear grin when he turned and looked at me after the first "PING!"

I've owned several Garands in the past, a Winchester, and a Springfield. Loved 'em! The Win was a real rat when I bought it, but would still ring a 200 yard gong with no problems. A friend of mine who had all the tooling, rebarreled it, parked it, restocked it, new bolt, op rod, gas cyl. etc. It was like a new gun. Gave it to my brother in law who was in the Army in Germany in the 50's for Christmas about 40 years ago. Love the "PING"!

I'm a VN Vet 11Bravo. 67-68 . When I returned to civilian life , was always into target shooting and was looking for a M1Garand , couldn't find one , then a friend at work said he would put to out on his CB ( back in 1970 ) . Next day he said " Got one for Ya" Mike's gun shop . Tell Johnny Appleseed sent me . His handle name , walked into the gunshop , a guy behind the counter said can I help you . I said Johnny Appleseed sent me . He gave me a strange look and said , WHO. At that instant I thought my friend got me good untill the owner Mike said Yeahs , come on in the office . There it was a nice M1 for $100. With 4 bing clips. Sold it to a friend for what I paid $100. Didn't have much time then for shooting and to his day I can't stop kicking myself in the ass for selling it. Nuts on accurate . Great War Horse. I'm now shooting my one and only Rem.700 in 308 set up only as a benchrest rifle . Anothing to remember is M1 thumb , only happens once.

My dad wasn't a gun guy, but he always supported me and my brother when it came down to it. My brother learned in the navy and I learned in scouts and high school.

Don't know why, but "knock on wood", I have yet to have a "Garand thumb" shooting my Garand. Like it and my '03A3

I love mine as well. I dont shoot it much. Heck now dont shoot much of anything to conserve. Anyway my uncle served in WW2 and he was in the Normandy invasion. He came to my hose once for a party. He had early dementia issues. Anyway I handed him my rifle and the fog cleared. He smiled ear to ear. He talked and talked told stories no one had heard. It made his day. My aunt said he was like that for days before the fog resumed. It has been over 20 years and I remember that to this day.
