M1 Garand Ping

If you know what that ping sound is then welcome to the ping club. My dad fought in WWII and Korea. I have an old picture of him with a M1 that's very special to me. After shooting in the Dixie Double my son John used money that he had saved all year, (odd jobs at the airport, helping with roof and barn construction, and working on the farm) to get a M1 as he was starting to shoot modern military. He said he loves competitive air/smallbore, but that he feels so much pressure, so he shoots M1 strictly for fun. After the Dixie Double we visited my best friend in TN who is also a M1 owner. My friend took a day off to go to the range. They were like 2 little kids, and every ping that rung they just smiled. It was so much fun watching them shoot, and I bet I can identify a M1 ping a mile away. Couldn't help but think about my dad, and how proud he would be of his grandson. He died when I was a teenager so not even close to meeting my son, but I think I see a little of him when I watch John shoot, especially when he shoots the M1.

Been a Garand Collector since 99. Shot my first Garand Clinic at Ft. Knox, Scott Mountain KD Range, in 1988 with my Dad. He is US Army Retired, 19Kilo Heavy Armor 26 yrs and a Vietnam Vet. My Grandfather was a WWII Vet, and they both carried the Garand at some point in their Service.
I am a CMP Volunteer Armorer for VFW, Disabled Vets, and Am. Legion Posts.
Reach out if there is anything you might need.
I have a terminal case of “Garanditis”.

I started in '97 with my first CMP rifle. If you started around then, you remember the Golden Age of the CMP rifles. Nothing like getting that long box in from Fedex and opening it up to see what the CMP Gods might have bestowed on you.

I didn't know there were that many music lovers here. I was impressed with the number, and quality of M1 the CMP had. We have been down to Anniston 2x for various matches for John. Each time I'd look at their selection. They are very knowledgeable as well. When they found out John wanted to do CMP matches they helped pick a gun that had the best trigger action, and one that had a better sight system, but still remained in his class. This is the one my friend got while we were down there. It's not perfect, but he is a weekend range shooter. I swear I thought I was going to have to stop at a playground those two were acting so silly. I think from Alabama to Tennessee they read the manual 5 times, discussing how to clean it, what clips they need, ect. It's bad when I'm the only adult in the car. It was nice to see my friend, James, so nostalgic about a gun he had trained with during his Army days. I guess I didn't understand how many people feel that way towards a M1. I can't say enough about the CMP, great org.

Thats a cool story. I love my M-1. My Dad briefly carried one in Korea and hated it. He said the Chinese learned to listen for the Ping and then would attack. He traded off for the M-2 Carbine. Weight was probably a factor too as he carried a radio.

It's funny you said that about the ping, because my dad said they would carry several extra empty clips in close quarters and would flip clips up in the air to make a ping while they had a couple rounds left. He used to tell stories about what they did to the "gerries". Some funny, some scary. I'm just going to say in N Africa you never wanted to put on a German helmet. The Natives would crawl over feel for the curved helmet and well you get the picture. So it doesn't surprise me that they made fake pings.

I have 3 Garands 1 Winchester , 2 Springfields. The best shooter is the WWII Winchester which still has the WWII barrel and a Springfield M!A from the 1990's and has a Winchester barrel that shoots very well.
