Lyman case length gauge?

I've got this in my reminder list at Midway. My two main cases of interest, .32 H&R Magnum and .22 Hornet are among it's measures. But I haven't found information/instructions anywhere. I presume you take the empty case and try to put it into the slot. If it fits, good to go, and if it doesn't fit it needs trimming? For loading go to the range and plink/practice/play is that good enough or do you need to caliper each empty anyway?
