Lyman BoreScope w/ monitor. . do yourself a favor

Hey guys I recently purchased a Lyman borescope and wanted to pass along my feelings on it. Keep in mind I've only messed with one Hawkeye and honestly I can't remember it to well to begin to compare it. But if your like me and are thinking the $700+ price tag is a little more than you wanted to spend then check out the Lyman ($299 or less)

I thought that my cleaning system was adequate, it wasn't. I'm able to see quite well where carbon and copper lies. I'm able to see small scratches and pitting with ease. I thought I was getting the carbon ring, I wasn't. The monitor works great for me, the live feed is easy to just look down and see as I run through the bore. The camera option is very nice you can capture a still pic from the live feed. I'm able to pick up small pits in the cerakote of my chassis which looks rather smooth to the naked eye and feels smooth as well.

It is only 20" long but I don't mind switching from bore to muzzle, the rod is labeled in inches (though they are a little hard to see in the basement. I like that it comes with an SD card and a USB port adapter. I'll be making a file on my computer for the throat about every hundred rounds to keep track of the wear.

Just passing it on, this is so far one of my best purchases.

I have a larry willis bore scope that I got 2 years ago and it really changed my world. you don't have a clue about your barrel without a bore scope. just this month I went to buy a brand new Remington 700 long range because they came out in stainless. when I got it home I was cleaning the barrel and when I looked at barrel with bore scope I didn't believe what I was seeing! about a third of the way down the barrel it looked like something had cut a ring halfway through all the rifing in a prefect ring and then about 1in another cut. as you know most stores say all firearm sales are final! I called them and took gun back with bore scope and showed them the inside and they couldn't believe there eyes nobody had ever seen anything like that! they were great and thanked my for showing them and they took gun back and then asked me to look at all the new Remington they had in stock but the rest were good. I took it to a gun show and you cant believe all the bad barrels they were trying to pawn off! the show people asked me to leave which I did when they gave me my money back.
 
I've had a Lyman now for about 2 months, and as was said earlier, it has totally changed what I thought I knew about getting a barrel truly clean.

It has also shown me why a factory barrel vs a quality custom barrel shoot and clean totally different.

There has only been one factory barrel that I have looked at so far, that really impressed me, and that was my CZ452. It looked nearly as good as some of my customs.
 
This morning I found an email from MidSouth saying my backorder for one, from last June, was shipped. Checked the tracking. It is on it's way.

Cap't let us know how you like it. Mine is now something I wouldn't want to be with out. I'm not able to compare it to a hawkeye but I am able to see my carbon build up. Copper seems to be harder to spot but I'm normally fighting carbon anyways so it helps. One side note is that I need to make sure that I don't cast a shadow on the carbon ring because it tends to show a false positive of one, I just go slowly towards the chamber end to prove a ring to make sure I'm really seeing carbon - I've found an oversized bronze brush to be the most effective on the ring

Every so often I will use some Remington 40X cleaner on a nylon brush one bore size larger. Completely eliminates carbon without having to use bronze brushes in your bore. It has been many years since the last time I used a bronze brush.

Bore cam package contents question:
White box with what resembles 4 electrical
type plugs. What are they ?? There is no mention
of them in the booklet. LDS

They are most likely foreign 220V receptacle adapters for people using the scope in other countries. A lot of electronics come with the adapters nowadays.

I too was surprised to learn that what I long believed to be adequate cleaning was a joke. I quickly learned that there are three different copper removers in this world...ones that work fairly quick, ones that work but are extremely very slow and ones that do not affect copper at all. Most of them are in the later class!!! I have surprised many people with what I can show them with my borescope. I wish I had the ability to take photos with mine.

Try Pro Shot Copper solvent. Works just as well as anything out there for copper but doesn't have ammonia. Very mild smell. Can clean guns anywhere you like and the mrs. wont complain
 
When I ordered the Lyman from optic planet I knew it was back ordered. Turns out it shipped the next day! I think they really don't know what they have as I have had to wait weeks on items they had "in stock"

+1 on Lyman bore scope as a great purchase

My problem now is I'm not always smart enough to know what I'm looking at when I see it? I see stuff all the time and think "that's not good, did that come like that, did leaving solvent overnight do that?"

I've also been a believer that the barrel doesn't need to be squeeky clean. Of course the first thing I did when I got the borescope is clean every rifle I have till they were spotless. Jury is still out on whether they shoot better now.

Not sure what you mean....I never mentioned a brand. Are you asking which ones are worthless or which one actually works???
JB Bore Cleaner works the best and is the fastest. Sweet's 7.62 will remove copper, but it's slow and by the time you leave it in the bore long enough to actually accomplish anything it will eat right into the metal and pit the bore. Shooter's Choice will remove copper very slowly, as in plug the bore and fill it to soak overnight. The rest is a joke. I have tried them all.
I think what happens with all these guys that do not own a borescope, but swear by some copper "remover", is that they buy it and see blue color on their patches coming out of the bore. They believe this is what was in their bore as fouling, but it is nothing more than the solvent attacking their bronze bore brush. Blue patch equals instant fanboy. It takes extremely very little copper or bronze to turn an entire patch blue.
Of which you will now hear from many, since I said their bore cleaner don't actually work....they are all going to tell us how I am wrong and probably even say that "yes, I have a borescope"...but I'd bet otherwise.
 
Optics Planet....let's see. First, they don't warehouse anything that I can find. They basically go around the country buying up stock from failed gun shops, and then selling it online. I ordered rings for a scope. Got a set that showed water damage on the packaging and rusted throughout. The gun shop had a fire, the fire department soaked everything, the insurance settled and they liquidated the damaged stock to.............yep. Of course I could be wrong.
 
Used the bore cam today. Looked at a couple bbls.
Its a fantastic piece of equipment. Bright crisp/clear
picture. Well worth the price and then some.
MID SOUTH has the best price. Ya have to BO. LDS
