Lyman Borescope - Very Pleased and Impressed!

Always wanted a borescope, but could never bring myself to pull the trigger on a $800 Hawkeye. Yesterday morning I was browsing Amazon and stumbled across Lyman's Borescope. For only around $200 and with a lot great reviews I decided to give it a try. Thanks to same day shipping I was able to give it a quick try last night before going to bed. All I can say is that I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to use and amazed by the quality of the images. Can't image how detailed the stills will be on a larger monitor compared to the small screen that comes with the unit, but I'll be giving that a try as well. Don't get me wrong the small screen is fine, but interested to save a few images and view them on my large PC screen.

After I'm done inspecting all my rifles I'm pretty sure my brother and my shooting buddy will be borrowing it.

I am happy with mine. A couple of things that may be worth considering
  • I found the joints in the want were not matched perfectly so I took a fine flat file, followed by a fine round file, to the joints to give a slight concave.
  • The grommet that is on the wand will slide and can be used as bore guide, but it think it will wear out over time. I use a brass cone bore guide instead.
The other thing I did was purchase a flex endoscope camera for inspecting the chamber. The one I purchased from amazon has an adjustable light and is hooked to a PC.

just keep all oil and cleaner off the lens.

You will also find that after seeing how your previously fine shooting rifles really look, they won't shoot as good...

Com' on. If the doggone thing wouldn't shoot, knowing what the bore looks like is only going to possibly confirm suspicion.

Would you blame the loss on a 1/4 mile race on thin tires? Once, maybe. In a pinch.

With all the barrels I buy it's more than worth the $200 just to see what I'm starting with and what I paid for. Also, what you may think is a very clean barrel is often far from that.

Last but not least, it's amazing how crappy a barrel can look and still shoot <1/2MOA. When you compare a high quality cut rifled barrel to some factory barrels it's hard to believe the factory barrels can shoot as well as they do.

I'm comfortable stating that the average shooter, even the above average shooter, will get much more bang for the buck spending additional time and $$$ working up a load for the specific barrel and increasing the quality of their loads(using quality brass, improving concentricity, etc) than they will from going with a more expensive barrel.

I am very happy with my Lyman borescope, however, It has almost doubled the time it takes me to clean my barrel now. Quite the eye opener :(
