Lyman 500 Powder Scale

I need a new Powder Scale - my almost 50 year old Ohaus Scale binds and won't hold zero any more. Like me, it's worn out.:(

I've been considering the Lyman 500 as a replacement since it's easy to read (black letters on a white background), has a simple adjustment system, study body that's stable, and appears to have a secure pan support that won't easily slide off like the Redding brand. I like simple. ;)

Any comments you have on this scale or other beam type balance would be appreciated.

PS: Don't want an electronic scale. Also - use will be for precision varmint / predator hunting reloads, i.e. + or - .1 grain accuracy is fine.

Which Ohaus Scale? The Redding No. 2 Scale is excellent. It is probably the best currently made scale. I have one.

I recently purchased an Ohaus off this site, in very good condition. I was just about to pull the trigger on a new Ohaus 505 on Amazon.
Good luck, good shooting!, Jonathan Taylor

Ohaus 304 is the top of the line IMO
There’s a couple available from members but be ready to pay up.
I use an older 1010 myself

Mine is an old 1010 Ohaus scale - it served me well for almost 50 years but as I said, it's binds and won't hold zero anymore even after cleaning anvils and knife edges.

I was considering the Redding No. 2 scale but several of the reviews on Midway claim that the pan holder does not secure the pan and its prone to slipping off. The last thing I want is spilling powder all over the place.

Thanks for the info but I prefer to purchase a new beam scale. I will check out the Ohaus 505 however.

The current pan hangers, if the recent replacement I bought is representative, will require a little bending to get the pan support to sit level and prevent the pan from sliding off.

I bought a new tuned Redding from Scott Parker around 4 years ago and it has performed very well. Not aware of a pan problem, or any problem for that matter. Every loading session I confirm the initial load is right with a digital, and always spot on. Scott may have something he has tuned on the shelf, ready to purchase.

The older redding #2 master scales are made better than the new ones. I found one on eBay for a good price and reconditioned it as Boyd Allen suggested on this forum. It's right on and checked with gem pro 250. You can find them from time to time on eBay.
I would also add that I don't believe i've ever heard of the problem with the pan slipping off the hook with any of the older redding #2's.
