Sounds like something may have been missed. I would give them a ring and see what they say, but this was the FAQ in the instructions.

I would never run a press dry regardless of the cost of the press.Hmm. That seems a little out of character for SAC. Sorry to hear that, but I suspect someone was just a little off that day.
I'll put it this way. Almost any lubricant in the joints will be better than nothing or letting them run dry.
If you have any sort of grease or motor oil in the garage, it will work. Get some fluid in the joints, then wipe away the excess to avoid a mess.
