lube on inside neck

I was wondering who lubes inside the neck and why.i have heard several different thoughts on wether to lube or not to lube the inside of the neck,i look foward to your opinions on the matter.Cheers Steve

I have experimented with inside neck lubes, colloidal graphite, moly coatings, dry graphite, and white mica).

I use a K&M Arbor press with a force gauge attached to the spring-loaded ram. This lets me access the seating force required from bullet to bullet. I found that the various inside neck lubes did, indeed, reduce the force required to seat bullets. The problem is uniformity. It is difficult to apply any of the lubricants in a fashion which is really consistent from case to case. To be honest, leaving a bit of carbon in the necks worked as well as anything, as judged by seating force, and recorded ES/SD. This assumes we're talking about naked bullets. I use a nylon brush in the necks and just do 4-5 passes in/out, not trying to eliminate all the carbon in the necks.

Now, if you ultrasonically clean your cases like Jason does, then it's a different story. That process removes virtually all the carbon from the neck and the neck interiors can get very grabby without some internal lube. I've promised to send my Arbor press to Jason so he can experiment with various inside-neck lubricants and report the results.

I clean the inside of the necks before seating bullets with a bore swab of appropriate size. When the mop is new, I cover it in Mica for its slickness, but as it gets used, it gets covered with carbon and I feel this does the job just as well. It is my opinion that cleaning the insides increases the odds of more uniform neck tension and better consistency. Like the moderator I use an arbor press and hand dies to seat bullets.

I shoot with a national level 1000 yard benchrest shooter. He strongly believes in lubing the inside of the neck and uses a mix of 1/2 Kroil and 1/2 Imperial Sizing Wax. He is so "into" the minutia of this sport he has his chronograph screens spaced 48 feet apart to reduce as much error as possible.

Hard to argue with success.

I use a bronze brush attached to a handle to brush the carbon out of the necks and then a very slight amount of the above. Works for me.

With no concrete numbers yet, other than OAL variance) the NECO dry moly neck lube seems to work pretty well. Cut OAL variance by a MINIMUM of 50%,4 thou -> 1.5thou), and in some cases ~10thou -> 2thou!

Will have a write-up when I have the K&M press and more concrete numbers.
