Lowest scope base for Savage short action?

I'm currently running a 25 MOA EGW scope base with Burris tactical medium rings, and my cheek weld is more like a jaw weld. I'm looking to get my scope (Falcon Menace 4-14x44) lower. Rifle is chambered in .243 Winchester and I'm shooting 105 Amax at 3150 fps.

I think I can do without the 25MOA base and go low and flat and maybe change the rings to low rings. Any recommendation for a good scope base?

Maybe give these a try?

I like the Talley base/ring combo too. The low 1" combo works well on my 12 FCV with a Bushnell 10x40 fixed power (48mm bell). The medium 30mm combo works with my Vortex HS 5-15x40mm (not sure of bell size).

Chambering, bullet, velocity, none of that is the slightest bit relevant. What you need to do is simple math. Measure the outer diameter of your scope's objective bell. Divide by 2. That is the figure above which your base and rings need to raise the scope to clear a barrel that would be the same diameter as your rifle's action.

But BOhio, are most barrels that big in diameter? Hell no, most barrels are quite a bit smaller, and/or have a taper. So, figure out how tall the combination of the ring and base need to be to clear the barrel a bit (I like 1/8"), and buy your rings and base accordingly.

It's simple arithmetic.

Better still, do the math, AND use stocks with height-adjustable cheekpieces. 8)
