Love at first group

Well, I took my new stick to the range for the first time today. Basic stats are: Savage single shot target action in RBLP configuration, 28' Broughton 5C barrel, Sharp Shooter Supply Dogtracker stock with an adjustable buttplate installed, Nightforce scope.

Now, I have never owned a 6mmBR before, but from reading here and seeing them in action I decided to build one. It's main purpose in life is mid range F-Class shooting, mainly 600yd, and if the winds are favorable 1,000,have a 6.5 already for 'normal' conditions) I am most grateful for all the info here, and especially the load data. I picked RL-15 under the 107 gr SMK's for my first loads, starting at 29gr, and proceeding in half grain increments to 30. Jumped the bullets 0.015. Ran the Lapua brass through the neck sizer bushing die, and was concerned at the force needed to pull the expander button through the virgin brass necks but figured this was a once per case deal to round them out for initial loading, once all 300 are done and fired I'll be back to the normal no-expander routine), When I measured the runout on the loaded rounds, I was appalled as they had more wobble than anything I personally loaded before, but I kept reminding myself that this was the fireform/chronograph/scope and gun trial stage.

So off to the range this morning. No wind here at the house, so life was good.....until I got to the range and it started to blow, the wind, that is). So I set up everything, leveled the gun in the bags, leveled the scope to the gun, made sure the bore was in the center of the chronograph, etc. and boresighted. First couple of rounds were off to the right, so I moved the scope over 5 MOA and fired another shot, hit paper with it, so I shot 2 more and stopped because I couldn't tell what was happening. A walk down to the hundred yard berm revealed a nice hole that measures 0.335 at it's absolute widest edge to edge :) that's the smallest 3 shot group I've ever fired with anything. I am so in love! I kept going til I worked my way through my first 100 rounds, and with the conditions was more interested in the chrony numbers than group,,though 20 shot strings yielded nice quarter sized holes) and found that as my charges got heavier the SD was coming down, the 30gr load gave me an SD of 9). I can't wait to see what will happen with some load tinkering, as well as bullet trials, have Bergers, AMAXs, and Lapuas waiting for the next trip).

Very nice rifle!! and its allready shoot good too!

IM about to turn my Savage F-class 6.5-284 into a 6mmBR with a Broughton barrel to, so we will have a similar setup.

Did you keep the barrel nut? or toss it. thats one of the things im try to decide on.

Nice shooting,

Jerid

I had a similar experience with the first 2 shots with my 6BR.

I said to my bud 'There is NO WAY I missed the whole damn target!!!' Then I noticed the bullet hole wasn't quite round anymore WOOOOOOOO

Blackhawk, I kept the nut as I couldn't see a reason to get rid of it. One major reason I picked the Savage was to be able to get pre-fit barrels and change them myself if I wanted a different caliber.

Congrats and great shooting. Normally on the first firing of the Lapua 6BR brass I don't recommend a neck sizer die with expander ball. I prefer using an expander mandrel. That will iron out the dents and reduce neck tension some, but not too much.) Run-out should be good.

That said, obviously your system worked really well as you produced some straight-shooting ammo. FYI, you'll probably find you can increase your powder charge a bit with that Broughton 5C barrel. Work up in 0.2 grain increments.

Blackhawk, I ordered from Broughton directly, then shipped barrel and action to my gunsmith for a no-turn neck chamber throated for the long bullets.

Moderator, thanks for the advice, and I reckon next batch of 200 I'll use my neck-turning expander mandrel to iron things out, as I didn't like the expander ball very much. I am figuring to turn the heat up a bit, and pretty much planned what you suggested as to increments. I ran the fired but un-sized cases over my concentricity tool and saw less than 0.001 runout on the necks now.

Now that the cases have been fired, they've expanded to the neck diameter. There's no need to use an expander any more... unless your only neck bushing is really small, and you need to reduce tension AFTER neck-sizing. But it's simpler just to use a bigger bushing.

Exercion, excuse me for dropping in, but I too have about 50 once-fired, fire-formed pieces of new Lapua that initially went through a Redding neck die with an expander ball. Should they from now on just go through my Harrell's FL sizing die which does not have a resizing button?

Also, I am using a .267 bushing in a .271 necked chamber. I think the second go-around will get a .268 squeeze instead.

Exactly, Moderator, I plan to use the mandrel on my 200 other unfired cases. Once I have brass fired and sized for my match guns I never use an expander on them again. I just use a bushing neck sizer then and control tension that way. I'm new to the 6BR, but learned these lessons, the hard way sometimes) with a tight-neck 6.5x55.

Ben, like I said above, I don't use the expander again once they're fireformed, and now it looks like I won't use an expander at all lol.
