lost in all the 243 variations

Personally I think it would have made a LOT of sense to add case capacities in H20 to all the various cases. It's sort of meaningless without this information to individuals considering these cases . That's just my opinion.

Where do you get the 6XC brass from?

I got mine from Graf and Son on 08/15/14
Gina1 had posted a link Midsouth Shooter supply had them in stock on 10/08/14

But as I stated one day they were in stock and the next day not,I should have ordered more on 10/08/14 when I seen they were in. but I waited and they were gone. I have like 200 new cases so i'm not really in need of them and they can be made from 22-250 so I don't worry about it.

I have looked at the dimension of the 6.5x47L and the case is much shorter than a 6XC so I don't think I will ever try making them from 6.5x47L. and testing had shown a large rifle primer was a benefit in a case of the 6XC's capacity. so I see no reason to make them from 6.5x47L. If I would need cases the lapua 22-250's with some work would make great cases or any 22-250 Brass really.

I believe I'm pretty much decided on 6x47L. I can easily find pre-fit barrels, dies, and brass, and the opinion that no neck turning will be required seems to have the majority.

Thanks for all the input, everyone!

Wildcats are fun and down right cool, but like a lot of the posts, you have to deal with bs. Fewer issues by staying with tried and true 243 Win. And don't believe all the bs about 243 Win burning barrels. Anyone can burnout a barrel if they don't allow proper cooling. Good luck.

I guess I spoke too soon on the dies, it seems Forster has discontinued the 6x47L dies and they're not in stock anywhere. I hope I haven't made yet another expensive mistake.

Can't you use a 6.5x47 L bushing die with the appropriate 6mm bushing?

If Lapua made 6XC brass, that might be my #1 choice of caliber for this project. This begs the question - how reliable/simple/idiot-proof is the process of making 6XC brass from Lapua 22-250 brass?

They don’t, sadly (at least not yet) and forming 6XC from any 22-250 is pretty much equal in reliability/simplicity.

Making 6XC fro 6.5x47 however isn’t, as FJIM noted earlier:

So maybe 6.5 Creedmoor? That's a relative newcomer on the scene, not introduced until well after the 6XC appeared.

Can you cite the testing - other than what D. Tubb is said to have done when he developed his cartridge - that you refer to?

Lacking a reliable source for the Norma 6XC brass I embarked on a quest a few years back to make up 100 (98 in the end) from readily available Lapua Palma brass that had just been introduced. It’s not something I’d recommend to someone who’s new to case-forming - as I was at the time (my prior experience was making up 6HAGAR from Jameson and Remington 25REM & 30 REM, respectively) - but after a couple of ruined cases I settled on a workable routine.

The end result is 6XC cases in every respect virtually identical in appearance (save for the head stamp and small primer pocket) and performance to the Norma factory product. Perhaps with some propellants a large rifle primer is a better choice, or for a cartridge used for hunting or under temps of 40°F, but from my experience the small rifle primers are entirely up to the task. (This winter I plan to re-purpose at least 100 of the Lapua Palma cases I've been using for Palma for the past four years.)

Yes that would in fact be a helpful guide but over a wide range of individuals’ experience there’s bound to be a bit of ‘uncertainty’ to be factored in. Kind of like information offered up on various loads for any given cartridge: YMMV.

Thanks! Hadn't seen that news bit before. Wonder which Berger 105 they chose? My preference being the VLD....
