Theres no coming back from thermal. Its awesome.
Thermals are great for seeing what's in the bushes, just beyond what Gen 3 night vision can see. Night vision is great for walking around in the dark. Thermal is best for shooting stuff. Be sure its 640 x whatever and at least 30 Hz. 60Hz is overkill for the extra $$. Have fun!Am I crazy for wanting to own a $8000 thermo scope now that the night hunting varmint laws are changing in South Dakota. Looking at the Trijicon REAP-IR. Or should I stick with the green LED.
The bill is going to the Governor for signature. You will be able to hunt varmints on private land. Changes to the current artificial light laws will allow a non land owner with written permission to hunt without the land owner present. And yes night vision and thermo scopes will finally be allowed.Does any one know if night vision will also be allowed in South Dakota ? Marty
I can see the need to scan without pointing the rifle. Thanks for the input.Thermals & 3rd GEN NV are the step you wont came back from.
I can spot animals way past 700 yards and know them by movement. It will take you several times out to get them down by movement if you have never watched them in a thermal. Get a good handheld scanner so you are not waving your firearm back & forth. One thing for sure is a big jackrabbit will look like a coyote when its running.
For 8k you can have a great pulsar trail thermal & a pulsar handheld scanner.
Yes the repar-ir is a top line scope. Get a 604 core for sure in the scope.
That would be a total different hunt for me in Detroit Lakes area, a lot more timber. My son lives in North of you and I don't know how you would see them coming. A shotgun might work as well as anything!!!Hopefully your neighbor to the East (Minneyota) will legalize thermals as well. Been on a back order list for almost 3 months and its down to hopefully days now. Do a lot of chasing coyotes in ND & SD already. Luv to pair it with my suppressed 20 Practical or 6AR-T40. Be nice to chase them out of my backyard. Eric in DL
