Looks like thermo scopes will be legal in South Dakota

Am I crazy for wanting to own a $8000 thermo scope now that the night hunting varmint laws are changing in South Dakota. Looking at the Trijicon REAP-IR. Or should I stick with the green LED.

Thermals are great for seeing what's in the bushes, just beyond what Gen 3 night vision can see. Night vision is great for walking around in the dark. Thermal is best for shooting stuff. Be sure its 640 x whatever and at least 30 Hz. 60Hz is overkill for the extra $$. Have fun!

Does any one know if night vision will also be allowed in South Dakota ? Marty
The bill is going to the Governor for signature. You will be able to hunt varmints on private land. Changes to the current artificial light laws will allow a non land owner with written permission to hunt without the land owner present. And yes night vision and thermo scopes will finally be allowed.

Thermals & 3rd GEN NV are the step you wont came back from.
I can spot animals way past 700 yards and know them by movement. It will take you several times out to get them down by movement if you have never watched them in a thermal. Get a good handheld scanner so you are not waving your firearm back & forth. One thing for sure is a big jackrabbit will look like a coyote when its running.
For 8k you can have a great pulsar trail thermal & a pulsar handheld scanner.
Yes the repar-ir is a top line scope. Get a 604 core for sure in the scope.

I can see the need to scan without pointing the rifle. Thanks for the input.

Just remember even with your NV they can see better than you can so stick to the shadows.

I hunt coyote in Maine and New Hampshire. I have Gen. 3 AtN piggy back model (mounted on my daytime scope) with the Pro 850 IR. Great combination! Looked thru a friends Flir, 640, hand held Thermal scanner, and just had to get one. I use it for scanning the area, at night, for yotes and during deer season ,I tried using it by looking into the darkness that a pine woods forest has up herein the northeast. I like the white heat setting to identify game. Those 2 items aren't cheap and if money is holding you back, the deal of the century is the ATN X sight. You get thermal, an IR, video capability and streaming in a target scope. Streaming is when you can set your rifle with ATN on bait ,If you bait, and pair it to your cell phone, sit back and watch screen on your cell and scope only if need to. It' also easy on the eyes.

I have been putting your equipment options into google and trying to come up with the best bang for my buck. Thanks again!!

Hopefully your neighbor to the East (Minneyota) will legalize thermals as well. Been on a back order list for almost 3 months and its down to hopefully days now. Do a lot of chasing coyotes in ND & SD already. Luv to pair it with my suppressed 20 Practical or 6AR-T40. Be nice to chase them out of my backyard. Eric in DL

That would be a total different hunt for me in Detroit Lakes area, a lot more timber. My son lives in North of you and I don't know how you would see them coming. A shotgun might work as well as anything!!!

It's very tough if not impossible to call them out of the woods. Thankfully DL is right on the edge of the prairie with Hwy. 59 somewhat the border. Go west and its prairie and East is woods and lakes. I have had success calling them out onto the ice out of the woods. They're lazy, once the snow gets deep they'll look for the easiest path IMO. Can't wait for the Trail XP50 to arrive! Eric in DL
