Looking to have a custom rifle made.

New to benchrest shooting and am looking to have a custom rifle built, just wanna make sure i got all the details of the process down and would welcome any advice about specs and or parts.

So im thinking of going with a stiller viper action and getting a krieger barrel in 6mm br. The question i have here is if i have the barrel chambered and installed by Krieger is that the extent of the gunsmithing required as far the action/barrel go or is there more that needs to be done? also thinking of going with a 28 inch 1-8 twist barrel unless there is a more optimal length or twist.

as far as a stock goes im looking at having a masterclass benchrest stock inletted and pillar bedded.

gun will be used for 600 yard br comps.

This question gets asked hundreds of times. Use the search function, and start reading the hundreds of replies. Better still, go to a match and talk to competitors with the gear you're contemplating.

Your better off going with a one stop shop like Kelblys or one of the other custom gunsmiths that do it all for your first gun. They can set you up with everything to get you going.

Jarred,

TO add to what is already been said, It sounds like you have a good outline there. If you want to take a little drive to PA (rather than sending out your parts) to a fellow that has built a few killer 6BR's and 6Dashers (like mine and his), Mark King can probably take care of you.

I couldnt disagree more about going to one of the big names like Kelbly etc. These guys are top notch at what they do for sure but dont forget theres hundreds of top class custom builders out there that can get you going. They may not all make there own actions and stocks but they sure know how to build a competition rifle. If everyone took this approach and only went to big hitters where would we be. For a start there'd no longer be custom built rifles as Kelbly and all the big guys would be pumping out competition rigs at such pace that we'd have another Remington factory in no time. Nothing wrong with Remington but you get my point.
