Looking to compete for fun, need some guidance.

Thanks George. I live 30 minutes of Talladega, a couple hours north of Ft Benning. I am wondering why there aren't very many matches posted. There is a match called the 800 Aggregate scheduled for 1/26/19 that I won't be able ready for. There is an EIC match at Ft. Benning in March that I should be ready for. I'll certainly get some coaching. It doesn't look like they have the matches posted for 2019. If they have a monthly match, I'll need to shoot on Saturdays. I can do a couple of Sundays a year for a big match but hopefully they will have monthly opportunities on Saturday. If not, I'll have to rethink this because if I only get to shoot twice a year, I may as well go to the PRS. Does anyone know?

I have a lower with an A2 stock and a RRA 2 stage in it now and was thinking about upgrading to the Geissle and the UBR. Question, why the Gen 1 over the Gen 2?

I was thinking about building an upper. I have a couple of stripped uppers. Maybe a Midwest Industries upper https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/MI-CRT12-625-p/mi-crt12.625.htm

I enjoy tinkering around with AR's.

Nice, You're in a good spot.

Here's a good explanation on the UBR Gen 1 vs Gen 2 pro's n Cons

That Midwest Industries Free Float Handguard should be fine. Just be sure not to go any cheaper than a White Oak Armament Wilson 1x7 or Keystone Green Mountain 1x7 Button Rifled barrel for your build.

The RR trigger will be fine as well for starting out.
Maybe get yourself the Geissele later this year as a reward for getting your Expert or Mater Classification.

Are you planning on going Scope or Irons?

You know, I don't know. I'm 52 so my eyes aren't what they used to be. I can still focus on a front sight (I'm pretty sure). But I was thinking about going with the scope setup since I will have the UBR and can vary my LOP as needed.

at 52 it is probably best just to go to scope. Even if you can get a clear post keeping the post clear after shooting all day out in the sun can be a challenge.

With the Ranger on sale at $308 shipped free from Midway that I linked to above for you that is a great deal if that reticle works for you. It is busy looking at 1st glance but as you likely know all you want to >focus< on while shooting is the dot in the center. Once you get used to it all the other stuff in the reticle just seems to disappear.

Finding a mount that has the proper reach to get the scope forward far enough and that has the proper "height" for you to get a solid cheek weld makes or breaks any scope in XTC position shooting. One would shoot bad even with an 1800 Nightforce scope if it is set up poorly and they have to lift their head off the stock to see thru the scope.

If at all possible if you could sling in on some other shooters scoped guns to see how the scope mount they are using fits you that would be best. even better if it is the same scope you will be using. There is no one size fits all in this piece of the puzzle.

For me after buying another whole mount setup that didn't fit me properly I ended up finding the mounts Keystone used to sell fit me perfectly at 1.3" high. Scores and fun shooting matches increased greatly with a mount that fit me properly.

The company that made these mounts for Keystone is still selling them and at a much lower price that Keystone used to sell them for.

Geissele makes great mounts ($) with more options in reach and height dimensions.
This web page illustrates the dimensions well with some drawings.

I prefer one piece mounts but others will hopefully chime in with other setups that have worked for them

Hope this helps.

I actually have this one https://yhm.net/6-rail-extension.html
and a set of TPS TSR 30mm rings that are either low or super low ( I think they are low). I’m hoping they will work. I’ll check the height.
