Okay, so I've been perusing the internet for a while now, looking at different games, etc. I don't have any unrealistic expectations but I would like to participate in some type of long range competition.
Many years ago I was an active duty Marine so I have some range time. Our qualification was known distance shooting that is very similar to the EIC/Service Rifle matches. We shot irons back then and they are running the 4.5x optics now but that would be an advantage to me as my 51 year old eyes could use the help. I've built several AR's and would feel very comfortable building an upper and working with this platform.
There's also F-Class. FT/R would be more along the lines I'm interested in. I reload both 5.56 and .308 and have lot's of components, dies, etc.
And finally there is the Precision Rifle Series. That looks like fun too.
Funds are an issue. I'll have somewhere in the neighborhood of $1800. I have a bipod (Harris S with notched legs and very aggressive feet) and a good set of 30mm rings.
At $1800 I have plenty of $$ for an upper and a Vortex PST or similar optic.
As for FT/R, Savage has some viable options. Many are priced right on GunBroker. Most are in the laminate stocks and would need bedding I assume but I've seen some pretty good deals come along.
The temptation is to try and find a rifle that can be utilized in both the FT/R matches and a PRS match. I would say that the optics, namely the reticles and magnification might be the limiting factors.
From what I've read, folks that have tried this before have found most of the reticles that are suitable for banging steel are not suited for F-Class shooting. Reticles too thick. I've looked at some Vortex Optics scopes, comparing them to the Golden Eagle's reticle. Seems that about the best I can find are some that have MOA reticles with the fine areas of the reticles between the .1" range down to .06" whereas the Golden Eagle is at .016". These are also limited to 24-25x on the top end.
So my questions are:
1. Does it really matter? I can do a Howa Barreled Action in a KRG Bravo stock for about $850 or so, leaving $1000 for glass. Look for a used Vortex Razor Gen 1 or a used Athlon BTR. Shoot the one F-Class match and one PRS match a year I might be able to make, maybe two.
2. See if I can pick up a Savage 12 BVSS or the FT/R rifle on the cheap. I've seen them very reasonable. And then wait for a used Golden Eagle and play F-TR a bit more seriously .
3. Just shoot Service Rifle. I know I'll like it, I'm familiar with it. I live near Talladega so I have access to the F-Class and SR matches.
I welcome all opinions and questions.
