Need Some Input

The down side of the Teslong Borescope is too much info! My Ruger #1B .22/250 is showing a pretty good amount of fire cracking. While it still shoots brilliantly, it is obvious that its days are numbered. Anticipating the inevitable, what is the consensus of what pricing would be to rebarrel versus just scouting for a replacement rifle? I live in northern Illinois, so ideas for a good smith fairly close would be a help also.

You can ship it to a good Smith, anywhere. It'll cost around $600 to $700,including shipping. Just my thoughts here but when one of my 22-250s wear out, I rebarrel in 6br. I get much better barrel life.

Oh, and I highly recommend Bob Green in York,Pa.

The best place to send a Ruger #1 that I know of is Mark Penrod in North Manchester Indiana. Over a decade ago he was recommended to me by Krieger Barrels and I am glad they did. To this date he has done 5 jobs on number 1's for me, (including the one that is currently there). He has done several other rifles for me and a friend. I live in Northern Illinois also and usually make an appointment and drive down there. A bit of a drive but worth it to sit and talk to him and hash out ideas. Through the years I have come to find out that he is also well known in the benchrest and rimfire competition worlds.

I do plan to shoot it until it is done. It still can put 5 rounds of 52-grain AMax bullets into .5 or less any time I ask. I just want to be prepared.

I have indeed thought about the 6 BR since I love my 7 BR out of my XP, but I have a nearly new .243 so duplicating a caliber seems a little silly. Not that I would mind, but since I am retired and not doing all that much hunting it would be hard to justify.

North Manchester is about 4 hours or so from me, so unless I find someone else closer by the time I need to rebarrel, it would make a good excuse for a motorcycle trip! I particularly like that he has positive #1 experience. I've been told that a lot of smiths don't work on them. Does he reinstall the partial rib?

I can afford to put a little money into this gun because I bought it about 15 years ago through Guntrader from a guy in Idaho who was honest enough to say he thought the barrel was shot out from prairie dog shooting. 4" groups were the best it would do. At $250 I figured I could rebarrel it and still come out ahead. Turned out that a week of steady cleaning, trigger work and re-bedding brought that size down to .75". Discovery of CFE223 and 52-grain AMax bullets did the rest. As a result of all the above and the fact I failed to keep record of the rounds I put through it, I have no idea of the actual round count, but it must be pretty high.

When the time comes try @skeetlee or Pedersen Precision for a rebarrel. But till accuracy drops off shoot it and enjoy. I would order a barrel in the mean time to have it handy when the time comes...

Not many Gunsmiths want to mess with cutting the extracting groove and drill centers for scope mount for the Ruger # 1 re barrel job.

Sorry for your loss, but glad you have fond memories. I made that as a sign and hung it in my office for 15 years to stop "we didn't used to do it that way" arguments from my employees whenever any new idea was introduced. All I would do is point....
