Looking for special angle gage block

Lucky Shooter

I've looked unsuccessfully for an angle gage block to set the compound
to turn a MT-5 taper plug.

I've made this taper once by doing a lot of indicator work to copy an inside taper.
This worked but took too long----don't want to do this again if possible.

I have a Machinery's Handbook 25 but don't have a sine bar----and wouldn't know how to use it
if I had one.

The gage block seems to be the best way for me------if I can find one.

Will appreciate any information.

Doing the trigonometry is the right way to do it--you should do it to confirm after you use the gauge block anyway. MT fit tools need to be very precise.

Not sure what exactly you mean by "plug"- but any chance you could modify an MT5 dead center to what you need?
Could even be annealed to machine it if necessary.

We did one as apprenti. However, it was on a cylindrical grinder and we had a female Gage to fit it to. Using Prussian Blue, very, very light dabbing w forefinger installing blued finger prints.....just look for disruption of the swirls.
I do remember that it took very little matl removed to sink it deeper into the Gage. (shallow angle) We put a tang on ours.

I'm curious as to the "grabability" of the taper if a turned finish, even if polished nearly perfectly re actual angle.
But, you said you've done it before, so I guess I'm too far into perfection.
I think Keith has a sine bar. I know he has Gage blocks.
Lemme know how it turns out. I am interested.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to re-think this effort and try to learn more about sine bars-----don't have
any problems with the math for this.

i don't have enough attention span to watch a long movie. Seems my machinist handbook tells me how much in gauge blocks under my 5" sine bar to get an exact angle.

I guess I'm the idiot in the room. I needed a MT for a reamer holder I made. So I made it. I guess I didn't realize this was a big deal. (?).20190209_162313.jpg

It works. Good enough for me.
