Looking for new sights on a older Winchester 30 30 lever gun

Bought a like new older Winchester 30 30 lever gun on here not to long ago. It came with the hooded front sight and a flip up rear sight on the back tang of the stock I believe that is made by marvels or something. This is just not for me. Unless I am in bright light looking through this tiny hole I can not see diddly. I want to shoot it with open sights but don't know what is out their to change it up to make it better for me when I bring the rifle up and I can get on the sights quick and see them well. Does anybody have some suggestions? I would be willing to ship the rifle to a company that specializes in these type rifles to get it set up for my needs.

Thanks,
Dan

The hood on the front should push off, pushing toward the muzzle. The tang "Peep" sight was popular because it gives a longer sight radius and is closer to the eye. If there is a removable disc screwed in you can buy larger ones. You can also drill that one out. This was a very popular rifle and sight set up for White Tail hunters when people walked in the woods to hunt. Me, I could never use Open Sights and always used peep sights on all my rifles until I went to scopes.

Could you install a Buckhorn in the usual place and fold the peep sight down?
It may come in handy.

I would say you a few decades past the prime when many makers made lots of high quality after market iron sights. Cost and availability are not in your favor. Plus if your over 35 chances are strong between now and age 50 your eye sight will not be iron sight friendly. There are exceptions but the modern world is working against you!

In my 30's I could shoot iron sights better than most people can shoot optics. Now at 50 I am not sure I could do a good job with iron sights for anything other than instintive shooting and CQB even with my glasses on long range shooting with irons not doable for me.

Using iron sights had gotten really hard for me, so I put a Turnbull mount with a Vortex red dot on my model 94 (1952 in 32 Winchester Special) and have been having a ball shooting it again.

Here's what it looks like.

I can't use open sights anymore due to cataract surgery and request for distance vision as priority. Scoped my 94AE and love it.

I have thought for a long time that this kind of sight would be ideal for hunting in the woods. I've never used one but they appear to be a "great piece of kit"

Hey Feller, this is what I use on my hog rifle, works well with the factory front sight. In the woods and close shooting I screw the apature out and it makes a good ghost ring. Fits the two holes in your receiver... John IMG_20200912_134825964.jpg

That is what I am looking for. Should have it in the mail box the first of the week. Thanks for the info. I also just received a mint Marlin JM stamped 44mag they only made between 2000 and 2002. 16 inch barrel and it is ported at the end of the barrel really nice gun. I am going to call them Monday and see if 1 of those sights that are on the picatinny rail is available for it. I would like to install 1 of those and also have the option of putting a small scope on it also if I want.

I have one on my old Marlin m39 and love it. Nice and trim, adjustable and won’t get knocked out of zero.

If your tang sight is like the one I have, Could be Marvel or Lyman, look very closely and you may find that the peep will flip down at the opening and there is a larger peep opening built in. Or look into one of the Win 94AE rear sights.
