Has anybody found any super accurate loads for the 222 Remington using the 8208 and 52gr &53gr match bullets??

A man with a forum name like "k80skeet" has gotta be alright !
Although "k32skeet" would be just about as good !

We also seem to have an intrest in the fine old Triple Deuce as well !

Wish I could offer some insight on milsurp powders for you .

My maternal grandfathers old 722 , and the early 70's 700 BDL Varmint Special I recently acquired have only been fed commercial powders .

So far in the BDL Varmint I've just worked with the Nosler 40 BT and the Berger 40 . I do however have a box of the Nosler 50 Competition and a box of Berger 52's I'll start with next week !

This BDL Varmint makes either the 4th or 5th one of these I've owned over the last 30 or so years . And to be honest they ALL shot well for a factory production gun .

The nostalga thing is kicking in and I'm kinda thinking I want a 700 BDL Varmint in a 6mm-222 REM MAG or 6x47 REM whatever one cares to call it !

Sorry I msread your initial post !

IMR8208 is on my list for the BDL Varmint as we speak . As a matter of fact I keep an 8 pounder of it around at all times now . I've used it a bit in the 204 Ruger and several cast bullet lever action 444's .

I think I may just give the 8208 a try next week along with the Nosler 52 Comps and the Berger 52's .

f I have any luck I'll be sure to pass it along to you !

I do remember those heavy barreled model 700 that came out in the late sixties a friend of mine had one in 6mm Remington at that time I was shooting a couple of 40Xbr one in 222 Rem the other was in 22-250 those were the days. Back then I was shooting 53gr Sierra bench rest bullets and 19.5grs of IMR4198 in the 222 and 35.0grs of IMR4320 in the 22-250. If you find anything good with the IMR8208XBR let me know. Thanks Russ

I've just purchased a 1:12 twist Shilen Select Match barrel for my Savage LRPV and started load development using 8208 and H322. So far it looks like 22.3 grains of 8208 will be my go-to load. I've had no difficulty getting three shot groups in the very low "twos" and high "ones". I've varied the COAL from 2.865 to 2.885 but 2.875 looks the best. I'm using neck turned Lapua brass giving me a neck clearance of .0025", and CCI BR4 primers. The bullets are 53gr SMK's. I would like to use 55gr. Bergers, but they don't give me equal groups until I use 23.2 gr of 8208 which is maximum. When using H322, the best load so far is 20.9 gr. which gives me groups in the very low "twos". Hope this helps.

Are you sure of your OAL of 2.8xx as the usual norm is 2.1-2.2 and from what the old time benchrest shooters tell me, the ones that use to use the .222 before the 6 PPC, that with the 52-53 g bullets that a jump of about 0.025 was the norm.

ehkempf,

I agree, my COAL for the .222 Rem in my old S&W 1500 Deluxe is 2.20" when using 50 - 52 grain Sierra Blitzkings.

Bergers are somewhat longer bullets, but....

Perhaps Max will clarify.

ehkempf, sorry for the confusion. When I refer to COAL, I'm referring to the Comparator Overall Length using a Sinclair comparator. I just switched to a COAL of 2.880 which gives me a reload with an overall length of 2.220"
By the way, I tried shooting two three shot groups at 100 yards last night using 20.9grains of H322 which gave me two groups measuring 0.173" and 0.046". Maybe just a fluke, and I only had the six rounds to play with, but it temps me to try a few more.

I guess no one is using Imr 8208 Xbr for .222 Remington!!

Sorry to say I've not tried 8208 so far in the 222 . I've been shooting the Berger 52 , the Nosler 52 and some old Remington 52 Benchrest with N-120 and N-130 .
