Looking for Help Identifying Benchrest Rifles

Good afternoon, all!

Firstly, I would like to thank anyone and everyone that has any words of advice in advance. I also apologize for not being better educated in the world of benchrest and for taking up both space and time in this forum. I've spent a couple months trying to search for information trying to identify these guns on my own and have wound up more confused than ever. I also have one very active toddler who requires most of the free time I once had to do online research!

The backstory: my father was hoping to get into the world of benchrest, but I think he also just enjoyed collecting the guns. He had 7-8 benchrest rifles (and several other handguns, shotguns, and rifles) but after his death two years ago, a few managed to disappear. Five of the guns in his collection have been recovered and delivered to me. I'm hoping to identify these guns and most probably sell them so they can be put to use by somebody who can better appreciate them. I was enjoying a bit of rifle and handgun practice in the hopes of competing before parenthood, but I never even came close to this realm of shooting.

All five are either 6mm ppc or 6mm br, but I can't say anything else about them. Some have a polymer style body and two are wooden. All have different markings on the barrels, different scopes, etc. I'm not uploading any pictures yet in case this isn't the proper place to do so. I recently moved to San Antonio, TX so I'm not familiar with any of the gun shops around here. Does anyone know of someone in this area that could help me properly identify or appraise these guns, or is there someone online (either here or somewhere else) that can point me in the right direction?

Again, I greatly appreciate any help offered!

If you post photos, make sure you photograph the bolt side and off side of receiver, plus a "broad shot" of the gun as a whole and when you describe them, list the markings on the barrel exactly as they are written (eg. Hart 6PPC .062 neck). If you want, a photo of the bolt helps too. From that we can get some idea of what you have.

Butch is trustworthy.

I certainly would help you identify them, but I will not value them. We have a great guy in Austin that is of course closer to San Antonio. Pm me and I'll give you his contact.

I sure do appreciate all the information and help! I will work on taking some pictures this afternoon and get those posted tonight if I can. Thanks again!

First gun of five. This one came without a case. Last time I saw all my dad's guns, they were very well cared for. Some time in the last two years, this one and another were taken from their cases to be moved which resulted in a couple scratches. Thanks for the photo tips, Snert! I remebered to snag whole gun shots but didn't do such a good job with the bolts, I think. I jotted down the info just as it was written on the guns though. Hopefully the pictures show up well, but the barrel on this one reads "Cooper Firearms of Montana, Inc, Stevenville, MT USA" followed by a "6 BR" on the barrel by the stock. The bolt reads "Cooper Arms Model 22" and "2662." I'll work on posting the other pics tomorrow as I have time and after seeing how they show up (I resized w Irfan, but want to make sure I'm posting correctly).

Second gun. Also had no case but does have a mounted scope. Barrel reads "6PPC - 262 - NK." Bolt reads "BAT MACHINE CO INC, RATHDRUM, ID 3L449." March Optics scope reads "10x-60x52, MADE IN JAPAN, DEON X334."

Third gun came in the case it was shipped to my father in with the return address still attached. Also inside was an extra barrel still packed in a shipping box with the return address label from the Hart Rifle Barrels, Inc. company and marking (I think) indicating what type of barrel it is (Krieger, Hart .2430). It also has a mounted Leupold site, 128476R. Barrel reads "6PPC." Bolt reads "MF6R, MCBROS PHX, AZ" and "99-04.

If your Dad had some local shooting buddies, you might ask them to help sell the rifles and associated equipment, if selling is what you have in mind. Details affect value, so anything you can find out about the gunsmith(s) who did the work is to your advantage.

The BAT 3-lug in the McMillan Edge stock with the March scope is the pick of the litter.

The other BR rifle is a McMillan action, which aren't particularly popular. Lester Bruno might know where this rifle came from, since he used to build customer rifles on this action.

Thanks for the info so far! He wasn't shooting with anyone that I know of. None of my uncles were shooting benchrest with him either. They're a shotgun kind of crew. I enjoy shooting myself, but I've never done benchrest. I have one toddler now and another on the way so it looks like I'll be out of the hobby all together for a few years myself.

Below is the 4th rifle of the gang. It was in a case and inside were four mounts for the scope I believe. The barrel has engraved on one side "S. Kostavich" and "6 PPC 1.262" NK" on the other. The bolt is a Nesika and says "J0007" and "Paulsbo, WA."

I remember one of the last times I saw him at his house and he was showing me some of his newest guns, he mentioned one of them won either a national or international tournament of some sort. He wasn't the shooter of course. I couldn't begin to tell you which gun it was and even if it was one of these or one of the ones missing. If it is one of the ones in my possession, it may be this one or the next.

This is the last one and the pride of his collection. He went on for a while about the case at first. Something about approved for airline travel on its way to be delivered to him (the case is whopping metal thing with four locking clasps and a fifth bar that runs the length). The gun itself was made by "one of the finest smiths in the world" he said. Supposedly either his last gun or one of the very last that the smith made. Not sure if it was someone that passed away or retired. I just can't remember. This could possibly be the one that won a tournament.
Bolt is a Nesika Model K and says "K0840" and "Sturgis, SD." Barrel says "6 BR 272 NK." Scope is a NightForce 8-32x56.

This is an original Nesika from when the company was founded in Poulsbo. It's a right bolt - left port, probably without an ejector (unlike the BAT 3L RBLPRE in the Edge stock). Ejectors have become very popular, so the old-school Nesika might be worth more to a collector than to a competitor.

Steve Kostanich is a world-record-setting benchrest shooter and riflesmith who lives in WA, but it's unlikely that he would misspell his own name, so I can't help with the "S. Kostavich."

Don't sell them! You should hold on to your father's guns! He put together a very fine collection! You can enjoy a couple of those now, like the 6br and grow into the others later. I'm salivating over those guns as others here probably are. They are some very nice custom guns! PLEASE DO NOT SELL THEM!!! Some day, you'll regret it. Trust me on this. Josh.

I agree with Josh. As those little ankle biters grow old and leave the nest, your thoughts will often drift to your dad. Time does that. it will be a cool thing to have his stuff. Besides, by then, they will be time capsules. Me, I would keep the BAT or maybe the Nesika, for sure. Coopers can be bought and sold.

But if you have to sell, I will give ya a couple hundred for the BAT....;):D But knowing Josh he will outbid me a few bucks.
