Looking for experience with 6x284

I'm thinking of doing a 6x284 win for varmints and have some questions. If I do this I want a hot rod, I plan on shooting 70-87gr (more so on the 80-87s) bullets as fast and accurately as I can. I'm wondering what freebore is good for these bullets, I'm thinking somewhere around .080 should be good. I like it to be a little longer. Also does anyone have some real experience with barrel life. Normally I can search and get a warm and fuzzy about what to expect but I've seen from 400-1200 so I have no real clue. If I could get 700 I'd be happy. Also any loads with FPS would be appreciated.

I have mine set up with 12 twists, 87 V-Max base @ base of neck with ZERO freebore, this will also allow the use of 88 Bergers. In a 29"-30" bbl you can get 3800+ but I've found 3725-3750 is the better accuracy.. If you're using a shorter bbl length use a smaller case 6 AI or such. BTW H-1000 is the velocity king at least in mine

Make sure to have it chambered to Norma standard so you can use good brass like Lapua. My custom barrel is built off the Winchester spec and I cannot use Lapua brass, but can in the Shilen pre-chambered barrels for the Savage.

Barrel life and accuracy will vary but I think you will be happy with the choice. They are hot rods, and like all hot rods a price will be paid.

I run 107's in an 8 twist and am over 1k rds. A short action may work for you being under 90grs; not so great for 107's, though.

I have 3 6-284`s. I wanted a long range rifle, and to me that means high BC bullets, heavy ones. I bought 2 Savages and was told that they both had an 8 twist, but neather short heavy bullets well and both drive tacks with the lite bullets. If you have a Savage action I would sell one or both of them. My last 6-284 is a Shilen barrel that has been carbon nitrited so it should shoot a long time. Smoooth has the right idea, 107's in an 8 twist. Past 600 yards. your drop per 5 yards will be less.

I have 2 6-284. Same 700 SA with 2 barrels.
1:8 shooting 105 grain. Won 400yd match in 32 mph cross wind measured with a Kestrel. 98 some Xs.
1:14 shooting 68 grain bullets. Holy terror.
I dont keep records, but the 1:8 has 7-800 rounds and is match worthy still.

I shoot that bad boy cartridge. Just got back from Montana prairie dogs fields. I was shooting 51.5grs of Re#23 BEHIND 87gr V-maxes for a velocity of 3625 AVERAGE 8"twist. Average shot was 300 yds ,blew their guts out. But so did my AR-15 and 22/250. When this bbl is shot out ?( 3rd bbl ) I might tone it was down and shoot a 6mmXC. Because even though its a speed demon,ya still have to be spot on for range and wind estimation.

I drive them(hybrids) at 3500 with Ramshot Magnum. Don't know about barrel life yet. I have about 500 rounds or so. Last time I shot it, it shot a 3-4 inch group at 1000.

Nothing better for making groundhogs go airborne....crank that 87 v-_max up and be prepared to be amazed... I've seen them hit with just about everything there is and nothing compares to this bullet blistering..

Not to hijack this thread, but a lot of my coyote shots are between 3 & 400 yards. I am intrigued with this caliber and the ability to just lay the crosshairs on the critter and let er rip! No range finder needed! I shoot the berger 88's @ 3200 fps in a 243 and I am using the trajectory as an excuse of why I am not putting more fur down than I should be. Seems like they are always out there between 3 & 400 yards. Guess I just need to shoot more at different ranges.
The 6-284 and the 105's sounds like a match made in heaven. I would like a caliber that is a hot rod tho, but with a 24'' or a 26'' barrel on a light weight rig. Long action for the 105's then? Better options of calibers with a shorter barrel? Thx guys.

IMHO.... Don't waste your time and money on a short barrel (24"-26") 6-284, do a 243 AI or 6mm AI or similar. You'll end up using powders (faster burn rate) taking up only 80-85% of case capacity ..so why have all that extra space in the case when it can't be used properly.

Tater, if you want to shoot the 80's I can help you with a .22-.284. I run the 80 grain A-Max at 3750 fps and it really makes me look good! I have the reamer and load data, PM me.

You want a .22-243AI, you just don't know it yet...

Several buddies shoot .22-243AIs, and my partner shoots a straight .22-243Win. Almost not fair for the coyotes...
