Looking for advise on build

Hello
New to this site. I am looking for some help with an up coming build for a pair of rifles. I have a safe full of rifles but want something different. Have been thinking about something with a custom action for dogs and paper. I have been looking at the 20BR and 22BR, but not sure. I want something that will not burn up barrels but will reach out to 400yrds or more. I am open to action and barrel. What do you guys think? I guess I am asking for a wish list to work off of for a build on 2 rifles. I am asking questions now so I won't be doing this again.

Thanks

Howdy !

I shot a wildcat .224" cartidge for 30yr, in both 1-14 and 1-8 twists. I used it on groundhog & paper targets.

The case is .35 Rem necked down to .224" calibre.
I went with an easy-to-form 26* shoulder angle, same as 6mm Rem.

The resulting case had greater case cpacity than .22-250,
and is not as large in capacity as a .22-250 AI.

In 24" 1-14 5 groove guise, I got into the 500yd club handily.
The load was prototype Hornady 55"V"-Max
( had a boat tail ) over 41.6gr VV160 and FED LR Mag Match.

In 28" 1-18 5 groove form, I could put 3,500fps on Hornady
75 "A"-Max, shot over 40.5gr AA3100 and FED LR Mag Match.
Accuracy load was obtained, by simple switch to FED Match primer. Load vel dipped to 3,420, but groups shrunk very nicely !

This combo could put 450ft lbs on a groundhog out @ 960yd; so would be adequate for a clean-killl @ 1,000.
I have not yet had a chance to try such a shot.

My point:

I once shot my 22-35 to 3rd place in a local BR shoot, against things like full-tilt bench guns in .222, Deuce Mag,
6 X 47 ( old style ); et al.
PDs would be no problem, w/ the 22-35.

The 1-14 twist SS Hart barrel went past 3,400rnds BEFORE it ever keyholed its first bullet.

I have since moved on to use of a new 6mm wildcat of my own design ( easier for me to see bullet holes on paper ) !

All my 22-35 case forming, case reloading dies, chamber and resize reamers, formed cases are for sale.

** I even have a letter from P.O. Ackley, where he reviewed and commented on the design of my .22-35 wildcat.

For an action, you might consider a Pierce, sort of a Rem 700 that does not need to be " trued ".

For a barrel, I really like my current Broughton 5-"C" rilfed 29" SS 5-groove 6mm. I can clean it w/o having to use a brush ! These are button-rifled

My 28" .224 calibre barrel was a cut-rifled K & P SS 5-groove; and it was superb too !

My 1-14" .224 cal barrel was a 24" SS Hart.
Nothing wrong with that one. You have many great barrel ca choices, today.

Best of luck in your endeavors.

i'll start.. i'm sure you'll get more ideas... my next build is a .30Br [16-17 tw], i've got the barrel already but don't know when the funds will let me get to it
i have a wildcat in .25 cal an 6Br.. an both are great.. i'd consider a 22Br after the .30 as well

iceman,

If you are looking for a custom action, look for a used benchrest gun. You can pick up a used PPC, have the boltface open to a BR, punch the PPC to a 6BR. You just want to find one with, as much stuff you want to keep. You will get a action, trigger, stock, and most likely a good barrel. Then if you want to add a 22br or 20BR barrel you. Benchrest guns are great switch barrel gun. I have 3, that I got used, with 2 or 3 barrels for each.

As far as rounds go, you can't do any better than a 6BR. I have one shot kills on Va groundhogs past 600 yds, with 70 gr Blitzkings . A friend just got a 900 yds kill on a PD with 70 gs BT.

I have had both a 20BR and 22BR, they are great rounds, but barrel life is not as good. The 20 is hard on barrels, you pay the piper for the speed.

As far as actions, I have a Bat B, Stiller Diamondback, Hall S, all are good action. If I were buying today it would be a Bat. All the top action are Great, just look for that good buy. Good places the look are on the boards, This site, www.benchrest.com is good. Benchrest match are a good place to find them.

Barrels: I have mostly Kreiger, but have had most of the top makers, all are good.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies, it always helps to get some tips from someone else. I have heard the 20BR was hard on barrels but not much about the 22BR. I have a 6BR but wanted another 22 or 20 to play with. The idea of buying a used bench gun has crossed my mind, I may look into it a little closer.

i would also go with a 6BR. great reloading components out there. check this sight out for info on it. also check out the custom receiver manuf. and barrel folks also. cant go wrong with a stiller receiver with a krieger barrel attached.
