Looking to Build a F class Varmin rifle, but what caliber is the best to 1000yds

I am going to start a build for a F class rifle but want to hunt varmints as well as target shoot out to 1000yds. I am looking at a few different calibers. 6mm, 6.5 Credemore, 6.5 AI, 260 Rem., and 22-250. I am interested in any advise you may have. I have been using my 7mm Rem Mag but want a new rifle. I hunt yotes, lynx, and wolves here in Alaska.

I was planning on using a Rem.700 action, but would like suggestions.

Mine consist of a trued and blueprinted Rem 40x action, 243AI, 27" Pacnor SM barrel, Jewell trigger, Tubb firing pin, HS stock, NF NBR 8-32x56 scope, 105gr Berger and 105 Amax bullets.

Given you've already got a 7RM and aren't afraid of wildcats, how about a 6 Hot (6-6.5x47 Lapua) ?

You'd need a fast twist barrel (~7.5) to shoot the 115DTACs but it would def be a 1000yd chambering that is different to the 7RM.

I would go with a 6BRX or 6 Dasher 8tw. The 6BR IMP's will out shoot any of the other 6mm. If you don't have the Remy action, I would go with a custom Remy clone like a Stiller and others. If you have the Remy blueprinted , you have payed for the custom action. You could go up to the full custom action. Picking up a used custom gun can save you a ton of money. If you can find one with a stock you like, you will have action, stock, and trigger. I have bought many of these. I have a Bat B and a Stiller Diamondback, both guns are set up for long range benchrest and Fclass.

The std 6.5x47 L is -def- not a barrel burner unless you go mad with RL17 and the like. They will likely give at least 2500 rounds with std loads.

The 6 Hot is without doubt a bit harder on barrels but shouldn't be too bad for the intended use. It's a great long range performer with heavy bullets

If you can really burn a barrel out, count yourself fortunate to have that much trigger time and have a new barrel installed. You don't win the Daytona 500 because your car gets the best gas mileage!!!

Hello Dennis.
I live in Alaska and work on the North Slope about 6 months out of the year. I have plenty of trigger time. I usually spend at least two days a week during my time off shooting one of several rifles. But yes I agree, you win a race on good gas mileage. But you also don't win the race season if you blow your engine.

Thanks again Chris for the reply. I have been looking into several rounds and so far I am leaning towards the 260 Remington. The 6.5x47L is also in the final group. From what I can tell the brass is a little easier to get for the 260 Remington. And the ballistics are close. What do you think?

The 6.5x47 Lapua is not a barrel burner, you must be thinking of the 6.5-284.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is the answer. It's designed from the ground up to be an accurate long range cartridge that is mild on barrels and Hornady's brass is proving to be very uniform, available and modestly priced. Fact is the factory ammunition is 1/4 min. of angle in well made rifles. The cartridge deserves a serious look.

You've just described the 6.5x47 Dan ;D ;D

As he shoots nothing larger than a wolf, a projectile no bigger than 120 would be fine and any of the 120/123s would more than fit the bill to at least 600yds and probably further.

I'd concede the Creedmoor may be slightly better with heavier projectiles but he really has no need for them.

The 260 rem would cover a wide range of use. I like mine from coyotes to Deer.

Why just pick one. They are all great calibers. As for barrel burners they are easy enough to replace. Should be so lucky to burn em out. Its a good sign. I have several "Hot" barrel burners. Just pick one and start shooting. it's only money. Scott

Everything considered hard to beat XC
neck up to 6.5cal and same as 6.5x47 with large primer with 50% savings in cost of brass

6.5x47 had 3 will not build another lapua is taking the piss with $$ for brass

CM or XC same for less expense
